At a special meeting of the Hutt U censing Committee held yesterday, Mr. La we, liceusee of the Trentliam Hotel, made application for a conditional license for the Trontbam races. PoliceSergeant Bird opposed, and stated that tlie grounds of his objection to issuing a license were that it was not required, and that the conduct of race meetings without a publican's license had greatly improved. The proximity of Trentham Camp vas also a reason why it should not be granted. In tho event of tb» license being granted, he made the auggestion that no liquor should be sold for consumption off the premises. Motion that the application be refused wa« supported by J. W. McEwan, J." Cot ton, *.nd W. Wearne. An amendment that the application be granted subject to the <oiidition that men from the military camp« in hospital uniform be not supplied witL liquor was voted for by W. Cotton, 31. Wel*h, and the chairman (Mr. Riddle, S.M.).
