He proposes to draft a j new schedule which, if approved by Cabinet ;irl Parliament, will operate as from April 1, «* The secretary i»f the association says it is hoped some mdv.uu.s will be given by the Minister as to the direction his proposals will take towards removing the men's grievances, especially with regard to hours of work, etc., before the delegates take any action with regard to the secret ballot which is demanded by .various branches. The Minister's statement will do much towards relieving the feelings of the most militant Members. Ho adds that owing to the recent attitude taken up by members it will now be quite impossible for the executive council to accept or refuse any proposals made by the Minister. They will require to be ratified by members before acceptance or rejection. The council, while studiously avoiding anything which will dislocate the industries of New Zealand, will urge upon the Government the necessity of improving the lot of locomotive men. TIMBER EXPORT RESTRICTIONS. Hokitika, Jan- 17. The regulations restricting the export of timber are causing great concern locally, where the sawmiUing industry is said to be imperilled. Strong representations are being made to the Government on the matter by local 'bodies and othersIt is suggested that the Coast should J)e exempt from the operation of the regulations.

ROAD MEMORIAL SCHEME. Wellington, Jan. 17 At the Institute of Architects' Conference, Mr. Hurst Seager moved a resolution approving a proposal f-.>r a national memorial road from Auckland to Bluff, in honor of fallen soldiers, and asking town planning associations in each district to co-operate. The motion was ruled out of order, as no notice had been given, but it \v; later decided to forward it to branches of the institute and request their favorable consideration.
