The establishment of a fourth bowling club in New Plymouth was signalised yesterday by the official opening of the newly-formed Vogeltown Club. The project was taken up enthusiastically when first mooted, and though only a few months ago the members have succeeded in getting prepared for play a green which does them great credit. The club has secured the freehold of a property, and the work of forming the green has been carried out entirely by club members, with the laudable object of reducing the initial expenditure to A minimum. Taking all the circumstances into account, namely, the abnormal season, the short time since the formation of the club, and the fact that all the members are new to the game, a fine result has been achieved. , Of course a pavilion lias not been erected yet, but a temporary building has been put up to meet requirements in the meantime. Yesterday was the day to which the local enthusiasts had looked forward with great expectation, and it was fitting that there should be a large gathering. Residents of the suburbs were there in good numbers, including many ladies, and there were also good representations of the sister clubs of the town, and altogether a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was spent. The visitors were hospitably entertained, an excellent afternoon tea being provided by the lady friends of the club.

Mr. H. Benton, president, on behalf of tho club, cordially welcomed the visitors. ITe expressed regret that the condition of the green was not such as would enable them to play as keen a game of bowls as was hoped, but assured the gathering that that was due not to any lack of enthusiasm or effort on the part of the members, but entirely to circumstances over whieli the club had no control. He expressed a hope that the older clubs of the town wo:ild assist the infant club by bringing about an interchange of visits in order that the Vogeltown Club might get that experience which was so invaluable to all who were new to the game of bowls. In conclusion he expressed satisfaction that the club was able to open its season with the clouds of war dispersed, and paid a tribute to the services of the men who had gone forth to fight, and some to die, in tlie ureat conflict.

Mr W F Brooking, president of the New Plymouth Club, on the opening of its green, and also on the condition of the green, which, he said, was particularly.good for a first season, bearing in mind all the adverse circumstances that lmd to be contended with. He assured Vogeltown that the club lie represented would be glad to do all it could 111 the matter of the interchange of visits, in order to help the new club along. He wished them a very successful season. Mr. J. D. Sole, president of the West End Club, also joined in congratulating the Vogeltown Club In referring to the ,'jrcen, he said it was much better than many new greens, and even than some oWcr-ectaMhhed greens. The success of the club largely depended 011 the enthusiasm of its members, and so far as that was concerned the success of the Vogeltown Club was assured. Mr. W. Ileal}', who spoke on behalf of the Fitzrov Club, added hi-; congratulations to those of previous speakers, and extended a cordial invitation to Vogeltown members to visit the Fiteroy erecn, the members of which club, he was sure, would reciprocate, so that the new club members could get all the experience possible., which was so valuable to new players Mrs. Benton, wife of the president, ilien threw up the jack and deliverer, ihe first bowl, and Mr. Benton formally declared the green open, amid cheers and applause led by Mr. Brooking. A match was then played between rinks representing the president and vice-president with the following result, the vice-president's teams being mentioned first in each ease: Buckle, Buckle, H. Beal (s.) 28 v. Iloby, Lawrence, A Abbott (a.) 10. Tippins, Stlrman, Avery, Pri® (s.) 25 Healv, W Okey, Moore, J. Sole (s.) 23. West Smith, Boswell, Wood (s.) 20 v.
