STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent,)

(All ct'DutuuiicaUons, lottus, etc, !«ft with .Hr a J. Hopkins, bookseller, will-receive jiroajrt eiiKuttoii.)

A. AND P. SHOW. Stratford, Jan. 16. In our advertising columns appears the announcement of the above fixture, which will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, February 19 and 20. This show was previously fixed for last spring, but the influenza epidemic intervening it was decided to postpone it until the above date. Stock-breeders are always keen on the Stratford show, and the schedule reveals a splendid prke-iist which must induce keen competition. We are informed tliat ample feed will be available on the ground, and that exhibitors can rely on every assistance at the hands of the stewards, who make it their business to render every service possible and to take great care of the stock forwarded for competition. Schedules were issued last November, and those who have not received one should apply to the secretary. Entries close on Monday, February 10, and as a word of advice to intending exhibitors we repeat the secretary's words: Enter your stock now. GENERATE

Exceptionally heavy traffic is now passing through Stratford. Fine sheep, eloquent testimony to the pastures out east, are going north to the freezing works. The 2.10 sou,th train from New Plymouth was a heavy and lengthy one, and the coal tracks must have been | pleasing to the merchants. The north train, 1.25 p.m., required a second engine to take the heavy load of sheep, etc., to Micthirst.

| Stratford has some very heavy acI counts to meet in connection with fight- | ing the influenza, but Stratford does not etand alone The Egmont County has also received claims totalling £2OOO for services rendered round Opunake and Rahotu Comment ha 3 been occasioned at the lack of official welcome home to returning soldiers to this town. It is stated that three drafts have arrived and no one has officially welcomed them. At a meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Association last night the following resolution was carried: "This association regrets that recent drafts of returned soldiers who arrived at Stratford have received no official welcome on behalf of the citizens." In justice to the Mayor (Mr McMillan) it should be stated he is at present more or less residing at Nev.- Plymouth, spending a holiday there, and the deputy-mayor (Gr. J Masters) is engaged in the bowling tournament. Probably one of the other members of the Borough Council might have attended to the matter. The association members declare they have done (heir best, anil although many returning members do not desire any fuss, a welcome home is only in keeping with the Mayor's previous remarks that he preferred giving them a hearty reception on returning to making farewell speeches. Crs Cameron (in the chair) and Lawson were present at a meeting of the Fire Brigade members last evening. The brigade is now under municipal control, and oil the call for'nominations for the position of superintendent Captain Grubb and Lieutenant 3">avev vent to the poll, the office going to the former bv a fair margin. The election has to be confirmed by the Borough Council at the next meeting.

Whilst it is satisfactory to record gccd business during the holidays, Mr. u. jS. James desires to make known that he is still offering ladies' handbags at lowest prices. If ih need of a portnfentea:; purchase here and r-,ave money. Do you desire to present the wife, cister, or sweetheart with a watch, bangle, brooch or necklace? Mr C F< James will have the article you require, For tova hi? variety cannot be beaten, and for Doulton ware, vases, etc., his prices dsfv competition. Call and inspect An invitation to all, and no one prsascd to A DOSE EST TIME. You will never prow, this old proverb truer than when you take a cold hand early A cold in the first stages can be quickly relieved with a dose or two of a good remedy—Dr Sheldon's New Discovery—but a neglected cola soon becomes obstinate and harder to treat. Get in early. Always keep a bottle of Dr Sheldon's New Discovery in the house, and take a do3e at the first sign of a cold. Price, Is 6d and 3s. Obtainable everywhere
