INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Ingle \v< 1, Jan. 14. The railway station was well thronged with citizens on Monday evening to welcome back Private H. Curtis, H. *Raynor, E. Sullivan, and Atu from the firing line. Private Curtis had seen four years' service, whilst E. Sullivan had three years' experience with the colors.
The dry spell which has been experienced during the past few days has greatly facilitated the work of haymaking, good crops being recorded. The oat crop is likewise very good. Turnips, however, are making a poor showing, being very patchy, and, unless re-sown, the prospect of good winter feed from this source is not too bright. The Boy Scout authorities are busy making arrangements for the annual championship meeting, which eventuates on the 30th inst. Good nominations from various parts of the province are expected, and visiting Scouts from the other side of the mountain, with their leaders, will be billeted out over-night. An Inglewood boy who left with one of the later reinforcements mentions in a letter to his parents an incident which is worth recording. He states that "at a certain port it was discovered that the cruisers which were to accompany the convoy were short of provisions. The .New Zealand commanding officer asked the New Zealanders to forego one day's rations, and the suggestion met with unanimous approval, the provisions being hoisted aboard the cruisers, and naturally the compliment was greatly appreciated by the naval men."
