Councillors agreed that the risk pointed out by Inspector Day was a real one, but as the matter was outside the jurisdiction of the Council nothing could be done. It wav< decided to refer the letter to: tho Taranaki County Council

RACE TRAFFIC CONTROL. In connection with the arrangements for the regulation fo traffic on race days the borough inspector wrote suggest an arrangement that would return revenue to the borough, sufficient to pay for the cost of supervision. At the recent meeting, a modest estimate fixed the number of people carried at 2s per head at 1500. On arrival at the course many of the (drivers were asked for change, and this caused considerable delay, and while doing so other passengers slipped away without paying, probably by prior arrangements with tho person requiring change. It would be seen that each driver lost probably one trip, and at least two fares, during the day —costing him 14s. "A suggestion that I havo made," continued the inspector, "and one that appears to meet witfi very warm approval. is that ticlets should be sold in town for the trip aiid for admission to the course. The driver; would then have no trouble el out charge, ther? would be in. "weisiiers," and no growling about the fare; everybody would know the fare before starting. It would make the traffic more even, and lessen the liability of accident. After the day's work each driver would present the tickets he had taken,and draw his cash, less 5 per cent. The Jockey Club would no doubt also allow the same commission for sale allow the same commission for sale of cost of tickets, and sale of same, there would be a slight profit of £8 on the day's work. I suggest the matter be authorised at once to allow its use at the February meeting." It was decided that the. Council co'ajd not undertake the sale of tickets for admission to the racecourse, but the letter will be referred to the Taranaki Jockey Club for consideration.

VIVIAN STREET FOOTPATH. C. T. Mills wrote on behalf of some residents of Vivian street, between Robe and Dawson streets, complaining of the levels fixed for footpath formation, on the ground that they would cause the properties facing the street in that section to depreciate ill value.—The engineer reported showing the amount of lining required along that section of the street, which was just sufficient to take up the inequalities of the footpath, which in other places had to be cut down. It was decided to forward Mr. Mills a copy of the engineer's letter

' GENERAL. 'H'r T C. List applied to havn the footpath in front of the Daily News office repaired, by laying down concrete flags.—ft was decided that as soon a? the new. building was completed, the footpath be repaired in asphalt

E. Griffiths wrote in reply to the Council's letter in respect to the fencing of properties on Whiteley street, Motujoii. He noted that the Council, desired should have fences along t!i? Bub-division boundaries of the land, and that the .fences be in position by January ,IjL, He stated that he desired to put in #6 fences, but pointed out that such fences, if planted at this season, would die, and he asked therefore if the Council would permit him to defer the planting until about Juno next. It was decided to refer the inaceer to the streets 3ub-committee, to report on at next week's meeting. The borough inspector reported that the shed at the Hobson street tip, which "was used for storing papers and tools, had been destroyed by fire. The paper was ready for sending to Aucckland and tile tools were /alued at £2. There ff'erc also some of the .Vvorkmcn'a overfcpats in the shed, He Mated that tone of his men were working. there at the ;time, but some had been playing there just before the fire. He applied to nave a. , new shed greeted . slightly larger than the old one, at a'cost of about £lo.' :;---£ei?inis9ion was given for the erection ' afsli larger shed. ;
