The new manager of the National Bank here, Mr. J. C. Allen, of Paparoa, will arrive shortly- Since Mr. Hartley's death the duties have been carried out by Mr. H. B. Gordon, who will take up his previous duties as inspector after Mr. Allen's arrival.

Something in the nature of a rarity—a white kiwi—has been discovered at Taliora. The bird was run down and killed iby dogs at the rear of Mr. J. Robson's mill- At first it was thought to be a fowl, but investigation proved it to be a kiwi. The e!;in was removed and shown to several Maoris in Hawera, and all stated it was the first white kiwi chey had seen. The specimen will be forwarded to Professor Drummond, Wellington. The Hawera Natives were very enthusiastic over the find, and offered £lO for the akin, an offer politely declined.

After having (Tone what he could to subdue the Kaiser and his band, Lieutenant E. H. Young, of Stratford, has once more returned and taken up civilian duties, and has joined Mr. T. C. Fookes as partner in his old-established business as solicitor. There is a big falling-' away in substance of "Bigham" Young, as he was known in Rugby football days and now. Yet this is hardly unexpected, as he stopped one in the disastrous Passc'nundaelo fighting and was obliged to proceed to Britain to lay up for alterations and repairs. Always of a cheerful disposition, the Stratford man made a good recovery, which has been further improved by treatment at Rotorua, >"ow, beyond a limp aad two stone less in weight, he is just as good as ever. His many friends will wish him all the best going in his partnership with Mr. Fookes, the announcement concerning which appears on page 1 of this issue.

Mr. T. D Suliivan, borough engineer, informs me that with a continuance of fine weather good progress should be made with the Broadway Road improvements. Whilst not unduly optimistic, he believed that unless anything unforeseen happens we should have the mam thoroughfare tar-macadamiseu by the and of the autumn. This news will be welcomed by the business people who imagined that the epidemic and other causes were destroying all hope of having a cleaner and better thoroughfare than the present till 19i20.

Considerable interest is being taken in the progress of the bowling tournament at Auckland. Sharp's success at getting well into the semi-finals for the Singles Championship was particularly pleasing. No wires have come through,, indicating the winner, but it is hardly lllcoly our doughty representative has prevailed. The play of the Stratford men generally has been very satisfactory nnd should encourage other teams to try their luck next vear

Favored with fine weather, the Ngaere Gardens attracted over 2000 visitors on Sunday- Great interest was taken in the playing of the orchestrala, an instrument that is played by electric power and is surely the last "word in "boxed'' music. Certainly the selections, waltzes, marches, etc., contributed were a revelation to those present, and added considerably to the enjoyment of patrons. Messrs Lester Bvosr intend having the instrument playing again next Thursday from 2.30 to 4 30 p.m., and. with fine weather, another large attendance is a certainty

Whilst it is satisfactory to record good business during the holidays, Mr. vj. a. James desires to make kr.ovra that he is ■till offering ladies' handbags at lowest pric-is. If in need of a portmanteau purcha.ce hers and save money. Do you desire to present the wife,' sister, or sweetheart with. a watch, bangle, brooch or necklace? Mr C. E James will have the article you require. For toy,* his variety cannot be beaten, and for Doulton ware, vases, etc., hi.s prices defy competition. Call and inspect. invitation to all, and no one pressed to buy.—Advt.
