NEWTON KING'S EEPOKT At TJrenui, on Monday 6 Inst., for my opening sale after the holidays there was a small yarding and attendance. Most of the yarding was cleared but prless, with the exception of good cows, were lower than those obtained prior to the holidays. Fifteen-month' steers (on small side) £4 2s to £4 15s, 18-month to 2-year steers £8 16s. 15-montb heifers £4 6s to £5 ss, heifers and elaves £5 15s to £6 7s Cd, springing heifers £7 12s Cd to £9, forward to fat cows £8 13s 6d to £lO 15s. aged wethers £l. At Stony Kiver, on Tuesday, 7th Inst., the yarding was mostly forward and fat cows, which sold well. Two small pens of good 15month Shorthorn heifers made £5 Os Cd and £5 18s, cows and calvos £l2 17s 6d, fat cows £ll to £l3 15s, forward cows up to £ll 2s 6d, store cows from £6 for aged to £3 ss, 2%-year heifers It W B £7 10s, weaner pigs 19s to 29s 6d, small stores £2.
At Kohuratahi, on Wednesday, Bth, there was a fair entry but competition was hard and a good proportion of the entry had to be passed, although fair business was done during the day. Three-year steers made £ll Is to £ll 17s 6d, 2%-year steers £8 12s, small yearlings £4, stags £7 ss, lambs 9s 6d, 2 and 4-tooth wethers 24s 3d and 24s 4d, f.f.m. ewes 20s to 218 6d. ADDINGTON, Christchurch, January 8. At the Addington market the yardings of fat sheep and lambs were smallor than those of last week, but in the other departments the entries were larger. Fat cattle were somewhat irrgular, but on the whole there was little change in the prices. A little more business was done for export in cow beef. The export buyers were operating in lambs on an average of about 8d per lb over. All fat sheep pTices rel vlved almost to level of the double market j before Christmas, and there was therefore Uttle I business done by export buyers, supplies not 'being much beyond butchers' requirements, i Store sheep were easier, especially the backward sorts. The first offerings of rape lambs were In the market and they made 17s to 20s 2d, which was about 3s per head below what the vendors expected. Pigs—All classes sold well. There was not a very active demand for store cattle, except for dry cows, but dairy cows met with a fair sale.
Store Sheep—The range of prices was: 2tooth ewes 25s 3d and 26s Id, 2-tooth wethers 16s 9d and 26s 4d, 4 and 6-tooth wethers 23s 7d to '2Bs 6d, 4 and 6-tooth wethere 25s lOd to 29s 6d, 6 and 8-tooth wethers 31s. Rape Lambs—l7s to 20s 2d, mixed sex lambs Ids lOd to 17s lOd, fat lambs (extra prime) to 30b Cd, prime 25s to 28s, medium 23s to 24a Cd, lighter lambs 20s 6d to 22s Cd. Fat Sheen—The range of prices was: Extra prime wethers to 39s 3d, prime wethers 34s to 375, medium wethers 31s to 33s 6d, lighter wethers 27s 3d to 30s 6d, extra prime merino wethers 24s lOd, extra prime ewes 375, prime ewes 32s to 3(is, medium ewes 29s 4d to 31s 6d, lighter ewes 25s to 28s 6d. Fat Cattle—Exlra prime steers £23, prime steors £l7 to £2l Ids, ordinary steers £ls 12s 6d to £l6 10s, prime heifers £ll 5s to £ls 15s, ordinary dry cows £4 to £lO, dairy cows £8 to £ls 10s.
Pigs—Choppers £5 to £9 17s 6d, haconers £5 to £Bls6d (equal to 9d to 9yd per lb) ; porkers, £3 to £4 10s, equal to 10% d per lb; large stores £3 to £3 Bs, medium £2 2s to £2 15s, smaller 33s to 40s, weaners 14s to 28s, breeding sows.to £6 Is. Store Cattle—Calves 15s Cd, mixed sex yearlings £4 12s 6d, 18-month steers £5 12s 6d, 18month to 2-year heifers ££7 2s 6d to £8 10s, 3-year steers £10; heifers £8 17s to £11; extra prime cows to £l9 10s, prime cows £l3 to £ls, ordinary cows £9 17 Cd to £l2 10s. Dunedln, January S. At Burnside to-day there was a large yarding o" (at cattle comprising a fair proportion of good quality stock. Owing to the number forward being in excess of requirements bidding was erratic. Good beef sold at late rates, but a reduction in price bad to bs accepted for ther sorts. Prices: —Best heavy bullocks, £22 10s to £25, good £lB to £2l), medium £ls 15s to £l6 10s, lifjht £l3 10s to £l4 10s, best cows and heifers £ls 5s to £l6 ss, good £l3 to £l4 10s, light £9 10s to £l2. There was a small yarding of fat sheep, mostly of a good useful quality. At the opening the market was very firm, prices showing an advance of about 3s compared with the last sale, but later competition was less keen and prices fell Is 6d on openin? rates. Prices:—Best shorn wethers 44s to 47s 6d, extra 51s 6d, good 40s to 435. medium 343 to 365. best shorn lambs 38s to 429, extra to 455, medium to good 30s and 345, wethers, in the wool, 52s to 565. In fat lambs the quality was only moderate, but included in the entry were some very good ones. The market for the beat was very firm at late rates, but medium sorta brought lowor by Is than late rates. Prices:—Best 28s 6d to 31s Cd, extra to 36s 6d, medium 24s to 20s. light 20s to 22s Pigs: A good yarding of fats and a small entry of stores. The demand for fata of all descriptions was very keen and prices ruled on a very high level. Stores sold well also at prices considerably In advance of late rates.
