CONFLAGRATION AT WHAKATANE. BLOCK OF BUILDINGS DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ,Wliakatane, Last Night. A fire occurred at Whakatane shortly after 12.30 this morning, completely destroying a block of buildings consisting of the King's Picture Theatre .end the following shops;— Jury (draper), Thompson (confectioner), Green (blacksmith), Lawrence (saddler), Stark (bootmaker), Follas (bootmaker), Miss Lynch (music class room) The fire obtained a firm bold before it was discovered. Fortunately, it was a calm night, and the brigade, by excellent work, prevented the lire from spreading to other adjacent wooden buildings. The total" losses of stocks and buildings are over £6OOO. Insurances aggregate £2489, in the New Zealand, South British, and Standard offices.
