SUGAR CROP DEFICIT.

The estimated deficiency in the sugar crop owing to cyclonic disturbances is 40,000 tons. The Government has purchased 10,000 tons from Mauritius and Java.

PAYMENT FOR BUTTER.

Melbourne, Jan. 8.

A cable has been received that Great Britain is ready to' pay £570,000 due for the purchase of last season's butter. This amount will be distributed at an early date.

A PRONOUNCED EARTHQUAKE

A pronounced earthquake was experienced at Eucla, but no damage was caused.
