Colonel Theodore Roosevelt uiod peacefully in his sleep at Oyster Bay at four o'clock this morning. The cause of his death was rheumatism affecting the heart.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
A message from Oyster Bay says that the medical official statement is to the effect that Colonel Tioosevelt died as the result of a blood clot in the lung.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
Washington, Jan. 6.
■ Flags are half-masted everywhere in the United States, in the fleet, naval posts, cantonments, and public buildings in memory of Colonel Roosevelt. A thousand condolences have been received. ' New York, Jan. (i. The United Press London correspondent states that the King and Queen expressed regrets at Colonel Roosevelt's death and cabled their condolence. Colonel Roosevelt arrived at Sagamore Hill on Christmas Day. A week later lie was stricken with' rheumatism and sciatica. The right hand was much swollen. He remained in his room undergoing treatment, and on Sunday night retired apparently better. At 4 a.m. •Mrs. Roosevelt went to her husband's room and found him dead. He died peacefully. Both Houses of Congress passed a resolution of sympathy in connection with the death of Mr. Roosevelt, and adjourned for a day. A committee was appointed to attend the funeral. The late Colonel Roosevelt three weeks ago suffered from pulmonary embolism, endangering his life for several weeks. He was taken to a hospital and was believed to have recovered.—Aub. N.Z. Eulogising the late Colonel Roosevelt in the Senate the Democratic leader. Senator Martin, said the ex-Preside; IV patriotism and ability were unquestioned. He was truly a great American of unqualified courage. Senator Lodge declared that the late Colonel Roosevelt had devoted his life to his country and always sought to serve it.
