APPALLING SCENES IN SAMOA.
IMPOSSIBILITY TO COPE WITH THE EPIDEMIC.
Auckland, Last Night,
Dr. Appleyard, who helped to fight the influenza at Samoa, returned by the Talune. He states that appalling scenes were witnessed in the villages, in some of which every house was attacked. In some the whole of the occupants were found to be dead. There were only four doctors in the group, and it was impossible adequately to cope with the epidemic Plenty of drugs were available, but the great difficulty was dispensing them.
Dr. Appleyard paid a warm tribute to the work of the garrison, who rendered heroic service, attending the sick tliough suffering severely themselves, and supplying food to necessitous cases. Boatloads of foodstuffs were sent round the coast, many being thus saved from death by starvation. The garrison also sent carts round and collected the dead and buried them in trenches in the cemetery. In the early stages it was found necessary to burn a number of houses in which thp dead lay. The epidemic tad subsided when the Talune left. DEATH RATE IN AMERICA.
