ROOT CROPS FOR TARANAKI
CONDITIONS.
In the December issue of the Agricultural Journal, under ttte heading of "Answers to Correspondents," appears the following:— Swede Turnip," Eltliam:—l have taken two crops "of swedes ofl a piece of ground. Do you think if would be safe (from blight or club-root) to try a third crop, or would it be better to put in soft, turnips? Would lime he any help? I have not been able to get any fresh ground stumped, and would like to get some feed to help through the winter. This is new country, and the crop is fed off the ground.' ' The "Fields Division.—There is very considerable risk that a third crop, of swedes in succession would be .ruined by club-root; in fact, the risk is so great in your msirlct that such a practice should only he undertaken if it is absolutely necessary for you to have swedes. Substituting soft turnips for swedes «Hi land that has previously caryiefl two swede crops is -worse than trying a third crop of swecbs—at least, this is "almost always true where turnips are sown b > fore Christmas. Tn certain instances soft turnips sown late in February 1 , on land previously cropped twice with swedes and turnips have escaped severe infection with club-root- If you do sow swedes, we shout!! advise liming with ground agricultural lime at the rate of tons per acre,'but such treatment-is no criterion that the crop will be >■ U»- t factory.
