THE "VISION" OF MONS.
TESTIMONY OF GERMAN prisoners:
The Bishop of Durham, In a letter tu The London Spectator, tells a remark' able story of "superhuman interposition in our favor" in ."that dire autitonri of 1914, when our heroic "Contemptiblea" were in retreat, pressed hard by overwhelming forces, "To myself,® hj» writes, "nothing has come in the way of evidence on that sub- < jest with such a claim on attention and,. I think, on credence as what I heard not many weeks ago from my friend the Rev. W. Elliot Bradley, Vicar of Crosthwaite, ? Keswick, a reporter whose accurate mem- ; iiry and sober sense I entirely trust. : \ 'He got a practically identical account ' V of a, certain incident of thiit crisis from each of three soldiers, ola 'Contemp- " 'bios,' to whom ho talked on three several occasions. The first twp men were, at - ' dillerent tinies, in a V.A*D. hospital mar Ulyerton, where Mr, Bradley was rector between three and four years ago. Tha third man was seen not many months ago. working on a farm near Jtoswick after discharge from the Army, "Mr. Bradley nsked in each case whether the soldier recalled 'anything un* usual' at the crisis of the retreat. And each man without hesitation gave thil answer, The Germans were coming on •in massed formation, and the men of the thin British line were preparing to sell their lives dear; it was the one thing to do; the Teuton host could not help walking over them on the way to Paris.
''Suddenly the grey masses halted; 1 even the horses of the cavalry jibbed and reared; and tlia collision did not take place. German prisoners, taken a little later, were asked why they faired |to attack at such an advantage. The answer was straight and simple; thoy ' saw strong British reinforcements com* ing up. Such was tho story told, with, out leading or prompting as to detail, by these three isolated witnesses at flrit hand. Two, if not threo, added Quietus ' ths comment! "Jt waa ' '' ' < f»vr J a *
