WRECK OF THE IOLAIRE.
DREADFUL EXPERIENCES. THREE HUNDRED DROWN-ED 1 Received Jan. 5, 5.5 p.m. London, Jin. 2. Details of the lolairo wreck show it was a clear night with a roughish sea. A sudden storm carried her broadside out to the entrance ol Stronaway Harbor, ivhcn she became unmanageable. She struck bow on, and grounded a few yards from the ledge of rock jutting from the • shore. Seas continually swept her, and within a few minutes she had listed broadside on. Two boats were launched but were smashed to pieces. ■ Fifty or sixty men, tempted by t,he nearness of the shore, jumped for the ledge, and were killed on the ragged rock. Some reached the ledge, but were washed off. Finally two landed, and got a hawser secured, by which the survivors on board the lolaire were rescued. Offing to the intense cold; many failed to keep hold of the hawser, and were drowned.
The lolaire broke up in half an hour and disappeared-
The total roll ig three hundred. Only forty were saved, of whom many were badly injured amongst the jagged rooks.
