HARVEST PROSPECTS.
LATE SEASON IN CANTERBURY.
Ohristchurch, Jan. 3.
Business in the grain and produce market has not yet settled down sincethe holidays, and there is little doing. Interest is now beginning to be centred in the new crops, which are much more; promising than for several years past. The harvest will be late, and it may be months before any wheat is ready for the binder. A few paddocks of Algerian oats on light land are in stock, and others are changing color. There will not be great weight of straw m either wheat or oats owing to the want of rain in the spring, but both are well headed. Some offers have been made at about 5s at oo'intry sLitioits tor new season's oats, but no business is yet reportedOatsheaf chaff -is likely to command a good price, for although the demand may not be-£u great a., last year, the quality trill In. so mucii better. The potato crop so far is looking remarkably well, and with the low temperature this aumtner there !s not likely to be any danger from blight. The crop in the Auckland district is a specially good one, and the demand for potatoes from {here' is not likely to set in as early as usual. The ryegrass crop is expected to be much smaller than that of last year, but the white clover crop promises to be greater. The cocksfoot crop also should yield better.
