. SEARCH FOR ARYAN'S BOAT By Telegraph.—Press Association; Wellington, Dec. 31. Hon. T M. Wilford has given instructions to send the Ilinemoa, the only available vessel, in search of the Aryan's missing boat, but he fears it will be impossible to despatch her before Friday. AN OVERDUE SCHOONER. Wellington, Dec.' 31. There is some anxiety here vo the American schooner Georgette, which left Frisco on October 18 for Wellington. She was sighted off the Wellington Heads on 14th December in lino weather, but she was later blown off by a strong westerly gale. Since that,time no more has been seen of the vessel, despite the fact that several favorable winds have prevailed. THE HUIA GOES AGROUND, " Wellington, Dec. 31. The statement that the small steamer which went ashore at Farewell Spit on Saturday was the Wellington Steamship Company's Huia was confirmed when the little vessel arrived at Wellington this afternoon from Tarakdh© Tho Huia was bound from New Plymouth to Tarakohe, when she went ashore on some soft sand. She was refloated after a few hours at flood tide, and proceeded on her way, no damage being suffered by the steamer EAILWAYMEN'S GRIEVANCES.. Wellington, Dec. 31. There is reported to be every prospect of further action being taken ~oy the Locomotive Engineers, Firemen's abd Cleaners' Association in regard to its prolonged agitation for substantial increase in wages and improved conditions generally. The whole position is regarded by the Association as most unsatisfactory, and an " important urgent" meeting of the grand councillors will bs held towards the end of January, or as soon as a delegate for the DimedinOamaru district can bo elected. Meetings will discuss the present position as occasioned by the Government's attitude concerning locomotive men's wa,7M, and the advisability of giving effe:.. 10 the wishes of the branches as a further action.
INCREMENTS FOR PRISON OFFICIALS. Timaru, Dec 01. Hon. T. M. Wilford announces that the sum placed on the estimates last session to increase the prison officers' pay has now been allotted in accordance with the Public Service Commissioner's recommendation. The rate of increment for prison officers comprising chief warders and all below that rank has been fixed at £2O per annum, for female officers £ls, and for minor gaolers £lO. All increases will date from Api'ii Ist last, and are payable immediately
The pay of gaolers and officers, above the rank of chief warder will be reviewed when tho commissioner reviews the classification cezi April.
THEFTS ON STEAMERS. Auckland, Dee. 31. IVed Hunt, seaman, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for broaching cargo oti. the Ararat while employed as boatswain. Fivo V72terside>'3 on the same boat were remanded.
George Laughton, steward on the jcTisgara, we.; sentenced to three months' imprisonment for theft from passengers' cabins.
