The Press states that what is said to be tho largest fortune ever bequeathed to a NewZealander has come to a Christchurch lady lately The fortune is invested. in American mines, and the interest on the amount is said to reach the astonishing sum,of: £,IOOO. weekly. Quite a romance > is-'involved in the bequest. Over ten years ago a wealthy woman visitor became interested in the worl;. of a Christchurch lady whose paintings well-known residents of this city have much admired, The visitor endeavored to persuade-the artist to go home to continue her studies, offering to provide the money necessary The offer was declined for private reasons, and .the artist remained in Christchurch. That tile visitor's interest- was genuine lias now been proved is no uncertain manor.' Though the matter of the'boquest is still, in the hands of the lawyers, it is understood that when affairs in connection with the fortune are settled the artist will bo the richest woman in the Dominioa. Christchurch, Later Inquiries to-day suggest that the report published in the Press regarding the large fortune left to a Chrischurch lady artist have been greatly exaggerated. The lady stated that she expected a legacy from a friend in America, though she had not been informed that it had actually been given her, and was certain it would not amount td tho sum stated.
