TRAFFIC NEEDS FOR RACE MEETINGS. Wellington, Last Night. It is stated that, as far as practicable, the Railway Department is making arrangements to meet the traffic-needs- for race meetings. TURF TOPICS. ' (By "Moturoa ") The postponed Ashhur6t meeting tafcjs place to-day, the original handicaps and acceptances holding good. Considerable interest will be taken in the'"gathering, pavticulai'ly by students of fintres, and with "form" so fully exposed at Awapuni and New Plymouth the '"workingout" of a batch of weights declared some weeks ago will engage more than usual attention. Penalties will increase thepoundages of Henry Clay, Aliika, Hydras, and Cold who will be required to put up 101b extra, while Hurry Up is
not now eligible to otart in the Maiden Stakes.
The Ashhuret Cup, one mile and aquarter, will only draw a small field. Rose Pink is in Auckland, and ai the others Classification and Henry Clay are horses tli,lt have form in the'u- favor. Whiro and Miss Sation may )a best backed in the Hurdles, and llawakore and Starengo in the Pohangina Handicap. ' Gold Problem won so easily at Awapimi on Friday that ho must be given a chanee.in the Flying Hack Handicap. Philomela, in the same race, let her party down at Awapuni, .but she is a fair sort of a filly, and is always worth watching. Aiiika and Idle Talk have been running well enough lately to encourage support in the Ivomako Welter, while the Kaurnai Welter only looks a matter of health for Square "Deai, who is trained on the Ashhurst course. i'lio Gorge Handicap is run over a distance that should suit Classification and Signorella, both of which looked very fit at' Palmerston. Red Signal and Vance' are the best-performed of the crowd m the Maiden Stakes.
Followers of F. Tilley's stable had a gruelling time of it at Palinerston, though those who hung on to the end got some of their coin back on Acre and Rude. This imported pair have been a puzzle to punters. Neither have quite fulfilled their early promise, though they are useful sorts. Last season Aero won £970 in stakes, and Rudo'a contribution to "Wire Tokena's" banking account was £415.
On the strength of Thursday's running, Croesus looked d\ certainty for the Palmerston Stakes, and was backed down to odds on. But trie good thing came undone, the winer turning up in the Bozonian filly 80-Peep, who covered the six furlongs in lmin 13see, time which Acre equalled later in the day. The course was very fast. Zola's defeat by Arlington on the second day at Awapimi goes to prove that speed alone will not always win races. Arlington out-jumped the favorite, and the fast pace set ga?e Zola no time to recover himself between the fences. Walter Rayner won good ."aces with Aruake, and Zola sliould turn out an equally good stake-earner when he gains more experience.
Considering the tig aeMa, the dividends have been very moderate c,t Ellerslie, but at Awapuni both Hurry U]> and Courtfield paid handsom? .'pviccs." Our Stratford sporting confreres promise us a splendid day's sport on Wednesday next. Xew year's Bay, and it goes witnout caymg that all roads will lead to Stratford on that da,/. Special trains will run from New Piyiuouib, Kawera, and Wliangamomona, and hones from Auckland, Wellington, and intermediate districts will eompete with Taranak-I'3 beat- The Stratford course 13 prettily placed, f.r.d tho clua expects that with record acceptances "carded" they will supply the premier racing !U----ture of the province. Parltculan of railway ftrrangrmctits will be found on page 1 of this issue.
