WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Dec 28. Beautiful weather was experienced for Christmas, and another one has been added to the list of bygone Cliristmases, leaving behind a memory of presents and an overdose of the good things eatable that the season brings. A large number «f sports went from here to the races <tt Xew Plymouth on Boxing. I have not heard of anyone able to retire on his winnings on that day. At a meeting nf the Waitara Seaside Society held on Friday, to make arrangements for having afternoon tea, ice creams, etc., on the beach on January 2, it was decided that Mrs. Young should have charge of the ice creams, soft drinks, etc., while Mrs. Spurdle takes chaTge of the afternoon tea.
The committee took occasion at the meeting to present Mr. Hallam with a. case of pipes as a mark of their appreciation of the excellent work done by him for the society since its inception. Mr- L. Sampson, in making the presentation, said that Mr Hailam's departure was a distinct loss to the town generally, and especially so to the Seaside Society, and as such the committee regretted it, but they were glad for Mr. Hailam's sake, as the transfer to Auckland meant well-deserved promotion- The committee expressed the hope that Mr. Hallam would not quite forget the society, but when smoking the pipes would think of the good times he had had at the local beach.
Mr. Hallaip, in reply, wished the society every success. The work he had done had been a pleasure to him, and anything he could do While in Auckland to further the interest of the society he would do..
At_a performance given by Taranaki Amusements, Ltd., on Wednesday night, for the benefit of Mrs. S. Loveridge and family, there was a fair house. Mrs. iLoveridge will benefit to the extent of £G.
Another benefit is being given in a few weeks time in aid of Mrs. H. Paltridge and family, and it is hoped that it will be well patronised. Mr. S. Wyllie lias received word that his son, Captain E. M. Wyllie, has been awarded the Military Cross. Although the business people here were predicting a very dull tiipe for Christmas trade, I believe their predictions were not justified, as the trade done was little below the usual standard.
