STRATFORD.
| (From Our Own Correspondent.) [All usuaunlcatlons, letisrs, etc., lsfc villi ttr a. J. Uepila*. InolmUm, sill rswljo prong) UUiUwt.J Stratford, Dec. 21. Tuesday, December 24, was far from aa ideal summer day, the morning beiug a succession of passing showers and cold breezes, whilst after noon the sunshine | came out and pedestrians were quickly enveloped in clouds oi dust. To-day (Friday) the town is very quiet, and mauy faces familiar to Broadway are missing, their present address being the seaside, New Plymouth. It wa3 feared in the early part of December that Christmas trade would be insignificant compared with previous years. From inquiries made it seems that some business people lound trade rather- above expectations. A draper remarked that trade had turned out very good, and lie was well satisfied with results. A fancy goods' man also found trade good during the last few days, whilst a third man adiffflted that whilst the total for the month was hardly up to past years, the purchases last week were well ahead of the same week last year. Bookings from here vesterday for New Plymouth were over 200, whilst a similar number visited the Xgaere Gardens per train. The grounds were found to be in excellent order, and all present thoroughly enjoyed the outing, the day being a very pleasant one. . Messrs Lester Bros, intend organising further outings throughout the summer, whilst it should bo generally understood that llk so grounds are always available for parties, church, and other gather-:i--o who frequent the railways and into frequent contact with the
:ards will be sorry to learn that one of the Hawera. officials, r vJimmy" Townsend, died on Wednesday. Deceased was the oldest guard on the Hawera section, having becD stationed there 1G years. Dnring the past three months his health has been unsatisfactory, and latterly he was obliged to go lo the Hawera Hospital for treatment. It was then apparent that the e-.d was approaching, and on Christmas Day deatli ensued. Deceased leaves a wife and three children, one (Frank) being away with the Expeditionary Forces, having left the railway service at 13 to shoulder the musket. The interment takes place on Sunday, when his lata comrades in South Taranaki will have the opportunity of paying their last respects.
It is regrettable that a eiu'o possessing the membership of the Stratford institution should be unable to raise a rink for the Taranaki tournament at New Plymouth on New Year's Day. From inquiries made, it seems the players of note have centred all their ambition on the Dominion tournament, and do not feel inclined to participate in a provincial contest Hitherto Stratford could be relied Upon for four or fivo rinks, but this year not a solitary rink visits New Plymouth. This ig unfortunate, as the promoters evidently rely on, and expect, the loyal support of all clubs. Horses eDgagcd for the StratTord meeting are arriving here, whilst a few strange faces also herald the approach of the annual meeting. Hay crops are very light this year, and ploughing is very late. A good autumn may improve the situation, but, bearing in mind th» shortage of feed last winter, farmers will see to it that thevo is an abundance of stacks and green crops in security
