STATEMENT BY SIB 3&B. AT.T.-RV. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Dee 24 The Government does not consider it would he a wise policy for the country to become responsible for New Zealanders detained in Sydney by the shipping deadlock.
Sir James Allen says that he has telegraphed to the Government Agent in Sydney to see that none of our people are left destitute. The Government could not advise the shipping company to pay the men's extortionate demands, even in an exceptional case, for that would invite similar demands from every ship on the seas. It is understood that there is no prospect of the firemen turning to till after the holidays.
