Mr. A. H. Glasgow, of Wanganui, is on a visit to New Plymouth. A Paris cable states that the Sorbonne lias conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws on President Wilson. The Rev. A. and Mrs. Liversedge, of Hawera, are spending the holidays in New Plymouth. , Mr- A. S. Keid, of the editorial' staff of the Auckland Star, is spending a short holiday in New Plymouth. The Berlin correspondent of the New York Times states that Frau Wagner is dying of senile debility in Munich. A New York cablegram reports the death of Mr, W. H, Page, who was till recently United States, Embassador in Britain. ' , ; : :i Mr. John Cook, chief draughtsman in the Lands and Survey Department, Napier, is on a visit to New Plymouth, accompanied by Mrs. Cook. ' ; Captain Sydney Sergeant, of the' Health Department., a former resident of Tariki and New Plymouth, is spending the holidays in town. Mr. F. Thompson, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Whangarei, and formerly of Inglewood and Now Plymouth, is at present on a holiday Visit to New Plymouth. , Mr. W. ./ Lopdell, engineer to the Stratford County Council, who tendered his resignation at the monthly meeting ' on Saturday, has been appointed to the > position of- engineer to the Manakau County Council. Private Oscar Mars, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Marx, of Mangatolri, returned to ICltham on Monday night. Ho Was welcomed by the Mayor, Mr. T. B. Crump, and members of the Eltliam Patriotic Committee.
A telegram from Masterton last night reports the death of James MacAra, aged 79, known in racing circles, and one of the earliest coach proprietors in the Wellington province —Press jJssoc. The .Rev. He was statioiied at Kakaramea, and later at Opunake, where he labored a couple of years .and then received a call to Maiterton.

The Hon = A. 11Myers wa s among the speakers On behalf of the Government, he extended to Lieutenant Bassett a welcome home. In replying, Lieutenant Bassett said that he considered himself lucky to have gained that which so many had earned Thousands of men had periormed great deeds which had never been wtfit. Lieutenant Bassett was presented with an address from old boys of the Auckland Grammar School.
