TEEBITOEIAI. CAMPS. (Special Correspondent.)' Wellington, Dae. 21. Defence Headquarters announced today that the Territorial camps ior 1919 have been abandoned, The notices seut out in connection with tiwsejamps are cancelled. *• "" "~ Shortage of available staff and shortage of tents are two of the reasons given for this change of plan. The authorities realise, moreover, that the shortage of labor will continue to be acute for some time to come, and that many exemptions from attendance at the annual camps would be necessaTy in any case

THE FRENCH MISSION. The French Mission, headed by General Pau, is to reach Auckland on December 27, It will visit the thermal district and several other centres in the North Island, and will reach Wellington on January 5 or 6. Then it will proceed to Christcfmrch and Akaroa, and will return to Auckland, via AVellington, in time to catch the Niagara on January IS. Akaroa, as a French settlement under the British flag, has special interest for the members of the Mission The visit to New Zealand is necessarily hurried. In fact, there was a possibility recently that it would be abandoned" altogether.

STRANDED NEW ZEALANDERS. The Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Allen) lias received a communication from the 300 stranded New Zealandera at Sydney, asking him to use his influence with the shipping companies to s«cure the running oi a steamer to the Dominion before Christmas. Sir James Allen stated to-rtay that ho had referred the cablegram to the Union Company. The Government could not do anything in the matter The delay appeared to be due to extortionate demands made by the firemen.

OFFICERS' TRAINING. During- the next few months various training classes for Territorial officers and non-commissioned officers will ha held at Trentham camp The training will follow the lines laid down in connection with the Expeditionary Force, and the officers and N.C.C.'s will 1)8 given an opportunity to benefit by the lessons of tlie war. " Captain A. W. Brooks, M.C., will have charge of the physical training And Captain P. ii Henderson.. HC, will be the chief machinegun instructor. Experienced members of the training staff in all brandies are being retained at Trentham for future work. TRENTHAM. The Minister for Defence (Sir James Allen) stated to-day that the Defence Department did hot intend to establish a military college at Trentham. New Zealand cadets would continue to be sent to Duntroon, by arrangement with the Commonwealth Defence authorities, for training ■ But he anticipated that a good deal of use Would be made of Trentham Camp, in continuation arid extension of the work done there before the war. Probably it would be found necessary to keep Trentham Camp open during the greater part of the year -There would be Territorial camps, special schools of instruction,"refresher courses for officers and N.C.O.'s, musketry classes, rifle club meetings, and so forth. The Minister stated that, m; definite plans" had been made with regard to staff at Trentham Camp. Some officers would be there, but appointments had not been made. The camp was to be used in tha immediate future for ! the reception, if necessary, of any overflow of returned sick and wounded soldiers. Preparations were beim? made already for the men who might have to be taken into hospital at Trentham durinw the demobilisation period.
