OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Two deaths occurred at the Opunake emergency hospital on Saturday. Miss Rowlands, who has been for some time mistress of the Mangahume Schooi, and a young girl, Miss Linda Baker (Kahotu), succumbed to influenza. Miss Rowlands had been assisting at nursing before taking the "flu." A public meeting was held on Thursday evening, when Major Keenan ad dressed those present, and a motion was unanimously carried that the local bodies recognise the services of the nurse*. The Court on Thursday was occupied most of the time with the case of 0 Sullivan (Mr. Marshall) v. Harry Baylis (Mr. Bennett). The case was partly heard at the August sitting. O'Suilivan claimed. £ 1-2 for IOS 3of time in recovering three head of stock from Baylis' property, and Baylis counter-claimed for repairs to boundary fance, damages to stock through being dogged, and loss of 30 heifers, a total claim of £IOO. His Worship gave judgment for O'Sullivan for £6, court costs, and witnesses ; expenses, totalling £.19 10s, and judgment on the counter-claim for £3 and cost*, amounting to £8 12s. A neglected" child, eight years of age. from Te Kiri, was committed to tne Presbyterian Probation School, ketone. The influenza epidemic appears to be in evidence on the border of the county, between Egmont, Waimate, anu Kaponga. A patient in the Opunake hospital had only arrived in Opunake a few days when he began to think he had the "flu," and he walked into the hospital and asked that his temperature be taken. It was close on 104, so the nurses booked him a bed. The annual meeting of the Seaside Society was held on Friday evening, Mr S. M. Cornish (president) in the chair. The annual balance-sheet showed the society to be in a strong financial position, with a good cash credit. The election of officers resulted:—President,' Mr. S. M. Cornish; vice-gresidents, Messrs J. Macfie, A. Brunette, A. Walsh, A. Feaver, G. Cook; General Committee, Messrs C. Clarke, R. C Pease, D. Ross, J. P. Burton, G. Hammond, T J. Mildenhall, E. Thorpe, .T. Greonhill. New members appointed were: Revs. Strand, Palmer, and Mr, Winstanley. of repairs to the swings, trac". and boys' bathing shed were authorised. Mr. Blyth, who has been secretary for the past six years, resigned, and the vacancy was left open for a future meeting. The fete will be held before the schools re-open, the date to be fixed later.
