AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTION

RESIGNATION OF DIRECTOR, A special meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held Thursday to consider matters relating to the organisation of agricultural instruction throughout the district. In the absence of the chairman (Mr R. Masters) through Indisposition, Mir H.' Trimble presided, and there were also present, Messrs S. Smith, M.P., H, .T, Eaves, T. Buchanan, H. H Grayling p.ml P. J. White. Leave of absence was granted to the chairman anil Mr C A. Wilkinson, M.P. The chairman said the resignation of tha Director of Agricultural Instruction (Mr R. A. Browne) had been received by the Board, and, in moving that it be accepted, he stated that whilst he himself had often been critical of what had been done in this department, he was not unmindful of the good that had b'pen accomplished. The question for the Board to consider now would be, whether another director should bo appointed or whether to place the whole work under tne control of the Director of Technical Education. Personally he did not favor having two directors. Mr Smith eulogised the work done by Mr Browne. He advocated a progressive scheme, which would give every portion of the district the opportunity of obtaining instruction from efficient instructors. Much of the criticism was due to the fact that there had been un insufficient number of instructors, -with the result that important schools which were keenly interested in agriculture had not received the attention they were entitled to. The motion for the acceptance of Mr Browne's resignation was then carried.

On the motion of Messrs Buchanan and White, it was then, after a brief discussion, decided to place the whole of the work of manual and technical instruction under the control of tile Director of Technical Education. It was further resolved that the .question of reorganisation of agricultural and technical instruction throughout the district be referred to the Manual and Technical Committee, to report upon to the Hoard.
