STRATFORD RACING CLUB. SATISFACTORY ACCEPTANCES. Acceptances for tlie Stratford meeting on New Year's Day closed last night, and the club has every reason to be satisfied with the support accorded them by owners, who used the pen very sparingly, with the result that there are splendid fields carded for each event. PURCHASE OF BIPLANE. Sydney, Dec. 18, Mr. T. A. Stirton is reported to have paid something like 3000 guineas for Biplane, who will' join Scully's stable p.t Randwick. TARANAKI DISTRICT COMMITTEE: A meeting of the Taranaki District Committee was held on Tuesday evening, there being present : Messrs Ij. A. Nolan (chairman); B. H. Chaney, J. Gray. S. Pitt, H. Washer, E. F. Blundell. and 0. W. Sole. The chairman's action in authorising the advertising of the Egmont Racing vClub's programme, owing to the delay' that had occurred consequent upon no meeting of the committee being held in November as the result of the influenza .epidemic, was confirmed and the pro- • -tamme formally approved. " The Opunake Racing Club's programme for March 17 was also approve! Trainers' licensed-were granted to D. . ,T. Goodwin and W. Cook, and jockeys' licenses'to E. C. Fitzwater, W. C. Hogg 1 (subject to no objection from Auckland). L. Hale, and-W. Ayers (conditional). An apprentice's license was granted' to Newton Johnson. The Auckland Racing Club reported? that D. B. Anderson, jockey, had died: » isfiuem,
chairman's action in authorising a grant towards the funeral expenses was confirmed. An application for a grant from the district trust funds on-behalf of the wife of a deceased trainer was referred to-the trustees of tire fund. It was resolved, at the request of the Stratford Racing Club to appeal to the Sports Protection League for restitution of pre-war racing days immediately. A copy of the letter will be sent to the Racing Conference. TURF TOPICS. i' (By "Moturoa".) Manawatu folks will require the wealth of Carnegie to see out the programme mapped out for their (alleged) delectation at the end of the month. On Boxing Day and ths day following the Manawatu R.C. summer meeting oilers chances to "make" or "break"; the Manawatu Trotting Club will continue the uncertain exchange of wealth on the following day; and those who have anything left will do Ashhurst on the Saturday. Sunday supplies a "breather," after four days' sport, but those who can beg or borrow are sure to start the Monday (and the New Year) by trying their luck at Marton. After that the general opinion will be that racing is a fools' pastime, and the "never again" wail will rend the air. But there is Fcilding due on January 8. What of that? New Year resolutions are only made to be broken. The Auckland Cup is still the chief topic. Sasanof's starting appears to be dependent on Hector Gray's ability to take his \seat in the saddle on Boxing Day. The Taranaki horseman was seriously injured at Riccarton, and a fractured pelvis does not mend in a couple of months. He will take a big risk if he puts his leg across the New Zealand ! Cup winner on Boxing Day, tempting though the ride may be. Menelaus is galloping well, and if kept nearer his field than in the New Zealand Cup lie may prove hard to beat. His stablemate, Mascot, lias gone off. Kilmoon is said to be a certain starter, and as the Kilbroney colt is training on well he is likely to hold his position as first favorite to the end. Bonnie Maid, who will be ridden by A. J. McFlynn, is a strong order in Auckland, and she showed up well in a gallop with Battle Song last week. Red Ribbon, who ran second in the Auckland and Wellington Cups Inst year, has come into the market, and will have the services of B. Deeley, who has won races on her before. Rose Pink carried her G.ll into second place in the New Zealand Cup, and with 7.1 will have to be reckoned with at Auckland. The race looks fairly open at present. Canterbury will be well represented at lillerslie this month. Harry Cutts has taken up Onslaught, Ileathercote, Lionskin, Happy, Captain and McDulf, and R. J. Mason took Gloaming and Afterglow on the same steamer. Others that are booked for the trip are Kilrush, Glendower, Killjoy, Kilmoon, Melee, Surveyor, Golden Crazier and Cynic. Southerners give Glendower more than a rough chance in tile Cup. If galloping and jumping are any guide, Waimai will strip the fittest of the hurdlers at the Auckland summer meetiiig. I" e old horse has been revelling in his work. Gazuye ;r iivuos to do as good work as any oi i hßailway Handicap candidates at Ellerslii), and he must have a great show. Bimeter was first past the post in a minor event (worth £9O to the winner) in Sydney this month. This is his first return for the 500 sovs an Australian gave for him. In fact, it is his first win since he scored at Hawera in February 1917. ■ Starengo figures in both flat and hurdle events at the Taranaki meeting, but Wanganui bouts do not fancy him as a hurdler. He has done nothing over the sticks so far to favor his chances, and Harry Rayner will probably keep him for flat racing for the present. The restrictions on racing in New South Wales will be totally removed on January 1, and the full number of racin" days restored. This year there were 32 permits for pony meetings, but next year the number will revert to 72. There seems to be no dearth of ponies on the other side. At a recent meeting one event drew so many Lilliputians that it had to be run in four divisions; while three divisions are quite common. There is a pony in Sydney that handicappers cannot stop from winning. She is only a 14.1 grey mare, and weight doesn't trouble her. This month she (Lady Liddell) continued a victorious career by easily vanquishing a big field under the steadier of list lib. A big team of Canterbury horses are under way for the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting. The following trainers will be represented: J. Bryce B. Jarden, A. Fleming, A. Pringle, f! Holmes, M. Euward3, A.' Hendricksen and ft". Price. Author Dillon's appearance at Alexandra Park (Auckland) will occasion some excitement. The New Zealand Trotting Cup winner will take on the Auckland Trotting Cup (worth 1350 sovs), and also have a smack at the mile and two-mile records, if conditions suit. Although set 156 yards behind, at matter of about 18 sees does not look a formidable handicap for such a champion . in the Cup race. Pennon is going well while the tracks are soft, but it will have to be a case of trying first'start for him. The imported nag won't stand. Zola is as lit as a fiddle. It looks hard to pick his equal at Awapuni. Client is moving well at Fordelly and will be very fit on Manawatu Cup day.
