Kirkwood ; (chairman) and J. F. Stevenson (Manaia), members of the Taranaki War Relief Association, who have liad to lay up 011 account of the epidemic, were congratulated by members on their recovery. Stratford County Council meets on Saturday. The election of a chairman for the ensuing year will also take place In reference to the Borough Council's, report on the payment of wages to men who were down with influenza, the omission of the word "staff" makes it necessary to state that the motion carried was that the electrical and borough engineers' staffs and pll other? should be, paid half-time for the period lost. The Gisborne Citizens' Defence Court has a total fund of £33,000 raised from various sources for patriotic purposes, and have decided to allocate £IO,OOO for the purpose of making loans to soldiers. The maximum lias been fixed at £2OO. Taranaki War Relief Association make the maximum £SOO. The clearing sale of furniture tomorrow (Thursday) of Mr. J. Lister will be held on tho premises, Fenton Strest, not Swansea Road as advertised. Mr. T. J. Lainason is the auctioneer, and anticipates a good attendance of the public, as the furniture is of the best. A final reminder is given of the gala day for children at Ngaere Gardens tomorrow (Thursday). With fine weather a large attendance of adults a-3 well as children is expected. With the possibility of an election looming in the distance it behoves those who 'have changed their addresses since the last election to see they are registered in the new electorate. Those coming to reside in the Stratford district should communicato with Mr. Stanton, registrar of electors. Usually getting in early means getting the best. This does not apply to the great Christmas Fair now commencing in the premises of C. E. .Tames, The shelves are crowded with innumerable articles that' will appeal to all fancies and fit all pockets. Mr. James has been very fortunate in securing some novelties that will appeal to young and old. There is no need to pass his shop in looking for that Christmas gift. Personal inspection is invited, and there should be no difficulty in pleasing all. During tho next fortnight Mr. .Tames expects to be very busy, so take heed and shop early.—Advt.
