OCCUPATION OF GERMANY, HAIG WARNS THE PEOPLE. Received Dec. 15, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 13. In view of the recent passage into Germany, troops crossed the Rhine and began the occupation of Cologne bridgehead. By the evening they reached the general line Oberkahhel, Siegtburg, Obenthal, Opladen. Sir Douglas Haig's proclamation is posted throughout the British army zone, warning the inhabitants against violence towards any member of the army, mishandling the armies' stores or doing damage to public works, under the penalty of death or other punishment. The most severe penalties will be inflicted on persons aiding German soldiers or civilians, disobeying Sir Douglas Haig's orders, or failing to disclose means of communication with the enemy.—Aus. Cable Assoc, and Heuter. AMERICANS CROSS THE RHINE. Received Dec. 15, 5.5 p.m. Washington, Dec. 14. The United Press learns from Coblenz that the Americans have crossed the Rhine.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. An American communique states: We crossed the Rhine and occupied the Coblenz bridgehead.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Association and Reuter.
