In tne past the patronage tendered by horse-owners to the Taranaki classic events, both here and at Hawcra, has been verv poor. In fact, last February no one wanted'the £SO which represented the third money in the Taranaki Stakes, and the prize went begging. This season, however, our leading owners appear to have realised their duty to the clubs wiiicli are making an effort to improve racing and cater for the best class of horse by offering big money for classic events S&ond forfeits see thirty-two remaining in the Taranaki Stakes to-tv-nine in the Egmont btakes, and twen- ' tV-six in the Hawcra gtukes, and these include representatives of the Dominion's leading stables, and the best horses at present racing. Desert Gold, Gloaming, Killowen and Croesus are in each of the three races, and, in addition, our Hawera friends have attracted Parisian Diamond, Onslaught, 80-peep and Acre. A meeting between Desert Gold and Gloaming is the most looked for event in tha Tacing world at present, and if the pair (with the addition of tha best of the two-year-" olds) met on Taranaki noil it would be an attraction ds luxe. Let us hope it oanuM our WWV i
The re-shuffle of racing dates conse- ' quent upon the ban on racing not being ' lifted until December 23. will see Ash- ', hurst racing on December 30, and ' ing on January 8. In years gone by the Ashhurst Club raced on this date, j but after two consecutive days' racing ] at Awapuni there were a lot of very tired horses seen out on the little course that hangs on the edge of the precipitous Manawatu Gorge. It is not a good date, but under the circumstances it may be [passed. Feilding will catch horses that (raced at Ellerslie, Awapuni, Marton, Ashhurst and Taranaki, and it promises to be a regular consolation meeting. The weights declared away back in November will stand, but afterjMr. Penalty has had his say those weights will be a sight. for sore eye 3. Something in the nature of a whirlwind trial was registered one recent morning at. Riccarton, when Gloaming covered a mile on the grass in lmin 40 4-ssec. Mr. Greenwood's crack should scoop the pool of w.f .a. races at Ellerslie, and it will be interesting to see what time the son of The Welkin registers on the fast track up there. Nothing but Kilmoon is talked of for the Auckland Cup, and short prices are ; being taken about the bay son of Kilbroney, and Onslaught, Gazique and King Lupin in the Railway Handicap. Kilmoon showed undoubted stayin; ability at Riccarton, and he has only weight-for-age to carry in the Cup. He looks a certainty for a place, but which one willitbeT Some hard (up) "heads" are whispering Depredation again, and the writer has heard of Beveral punters who have the reputation of exercising considerable care where they splash their loose ca3h accepting, big wagers about the Campfire horse. The local representative has a nice weight, but we have to go back a couple of seasons to trace his winning, and horses, like prize fighters, don't often come back. No doubt through oversight those noble prads, Marqueteur and Piano, hold their ground in the Auckland classics. One can hardly imagine the former troubling Gloaming in the Great Northern Derby, or Piano doing a similar trick in the Royal Stakes. But forfeits of 15 bovs and 10 sovs respectively are inclined to hurt! l
Volo, strange to say, figures in only one race—the Christmas Handicap, one mile —at the Auckland summer meeting. There is a very ordinary lot engaged, and even with 0.2 the Hawera horse appears to have a weight-carrier's chance Probably on actual form Mr McMancmin was justified in asking Warplane to give his stablemate, Ermine, 71bs in the Nursery Handicap, 5 furlongs, but a little of the inside history of the pair makes one smile. Ermine won the Wellesley Stakes on her merits, but at Riccarton was choked up with a cold, and could not show her best form. It is also common property that on the Awapuni tracks Warplane is no earthly use to the speedy daughter of Martian and Ermengarde. Both are engaged in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, run the same day. The Manawatu Cup field has dwindled down to ten horses, and the small field should suit Client. Last year Nobleman. with a "pull" of 261bs, beat Client by two lengths, but this time the difference is reduced to lOlbs. Client carried* 9.3 when he won the Hawke's.Bay Cup, IJ miles, in April, and amongst the beaten lot was Ladogeur 7.13. On these figures Client should hold both horses safe, but the question remains, "Can Rewipoto be restrained over the first mile so as to see the journey out?" Outside the Cup the Manawatu ac- f eeptances are first-class. Zola has been I paid up for in the Hurdles in preference j to the hack flat event, and will probably start a firm favorite. The only scratching was Tigritiya, who looked "good" on paper. Kipling may be equal to carrying his 9.3, but the big field opens up a lot of possibilities. The withdrawal of Torfreda and Kipling from the Juvenile ; Handicap makes the race look very'open. .Bonnie Briar and Affectation have shown speed, and most of the others are very "green." The scratching pen has been used rather I freely in the Grandstand Handicap,"but', a satisfactory field remains. Bagdad■! Elocution and Henry Clay should run i well over the distance. First Salute I showed promising form at Riccarton, and J may start favorite in the Hack Welter,] while Moutoa Ivahova should prove the! most seasoned of the crowd in the Trial Plate. Quite an aristocratic lot have been accepted for in the Fitzherbe'rt Handicap, which should be the race of the day. Croesus and Parisian Diamond are proved weight-earriei'3, but at a difference of 31bs the former reads best. The winner will more likely conie from the middle of the handicap, where Inah, 80-peep and Torfreda appear to be well placed, Pennon may be the best of the 6.7 division. Mr. .T. E. Henry's weights for the Stratford meeting offer little room, for comment. Mr. H. Coyle, the Taranaki hamlieapper, practically agrees with his Wellington confrere, though Glenroy, Hvginas, Kaimana\vanui, Piano, Jiu Jitsu and one or two others have more to carry i at Stratford, One queer thing is that ' Occasion is asked to give Piano 31bs at , New Plymouth, while, over the same . distance, Piano concedes Occasion 51b3 at Stratford.
