CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING, The quarterly meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce was held last night, Mr. F. S. Johns (president) being in the chair, and there were also present: Messrs C. H. Burgess (Mayor,), W. ,T. .P'enn, A. Goldwater, P. Jaciaon, A. MeHardy, D. R. Morrison, S. W. Shaw, A. W. Webster, J. Paton, R. C. Hughes, and E. Morrison. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Newton Kin?, W. Ambury, E. H. Tribe, E. P. Webster, J. T. Griffin, and H. Cocker. TELEPHONE TO MANAIA., The chief postmaster at New Plymouth (Mr. C. H, Burton) wrote in acknowledgment of a letter itora the Chamber in reference to the state of telephonic communication between New Plymouth and Manaia via Opunake. He stated he was having a obtained on the matter and would advise later. In a further letter the chief postmaster stated the telegraph engineer was not able at present to.do anything, owing to the lack of material It was intended, as soori as the, material came to hand, to re-erect the lino on the metallic circuit system. PAN-PACIPTO CONFERENCE. A letter was received from the fanPacific Union, suggesting a Pan-Pacific Conference of Chambers of Commerce, to be held in 1920 in Honolulu.—lt was d,ecided to reply to the letter approving the suggested conference. INCREASED FREIGHTS. ' The Prime Minister wrote in acknowledgment of a letter from the Chamber protesting against the proposed increase in freights on certain cargo from New Zealand to Great Britain, and stating that he was in cable communication with the High' Commissioner on the subject, and would communicate further' when a reply was received. CONFERENCE OF N.Z. 'CHAMBERS. Mr. W. J. Pcnn, who represented the local chamber at the Conference of Associated Ghambers held in Wellington, gave a resume of the proceedings of the conference. He pointed out that though there seemed to be little to show at the conclusion of the sittings, the conference was undoubtedly a useful gathering. The fact that leaamg business men from the chief centres represented their chambers each year at such conferences was sufficient evidence of their estimate of the value of the conferences.
