A London wire states that Tom Minn has retired from politics and taken up poultry farming. Dr Buist, of Kaponga, and'previously of Eltham,' has bought the practice of Dr. McDiarmid, of Hawera. Mr. E. P. Neale, M.A., LL.B., at present on the staff of the Ota.go Boys' High School, has been appointed compiler-in 'charge of statistics of finance at Wellington. Sergeant Trehey,.of the Ney? Plymouth police, who contracted ■ influenza ''early in the week, was removed to the publw hospital yesterday. , ■ In the latest progress report published Lance-Corporal CM. Colclough (Hawera) is reported removed from the seriously ill list, and H. J. Dundon (Awakino) as a not severe ease. A dispatch from the Western', front states that Mr Malcolm Ross, the official war correspondent ■ with the: NewZealand Forces", is at present ill, and unable to accompany; the- New Zealand Division in its advance to the Rhine. At the -very mature age bliieSrly ninety-four years, the death took placa on Sunday, at her daughter's,residence, Dunedin, of Mrs. Margaret Gordon H Burn, one-time principal of the Otago Girls' High School She leaves a family —Mrs, Allan (wife of Mr R S Allan, AE.); Mr. D. W. M. Burn, M.A., headmaster at Glenoamaru; and Mr. JSdgnr Burn, headmaster at Honiahapa. The resolution passed by the' ftrfctford Hospital Board in appreciation' of. The death took place on Thursday at the yew Plymouth Hospital of Jffiss B : Meade, who for some tipie was' fcad teacher of the Huirangi School; w!r«v« ' ■' she had done splendid work. When the influenza epidemic broke out and tln» schools were closed, Miss Meade, offered her services nnd for a while was engaged at the depot and later .volunteered for work at the hospital, where sho had been assisting in the nursing of influenza patients.' Unfortunately, Miss . Meade contracted, the diseasl,. and, in spite of a naturally' vigorous constitution and devoted nursing, shesuocumbel Sergeant John Meikle, of the Seaforth Highlanders, who won the Victoria Cross, was the son of a nephew of Mr J. J- Meikle, well known for many ■'■)' years in ,the public life of New Zealand. The following ia the official account of :r his achievements: "For most conspicu- ,«. ous bravery and initiative when, his company having been held up by mach-ine-sun fire, he rwhed Single-handed a machine-gun nest.
