Bee. 10. mere was a full attendant at the usual monthly meeting of the Hospital Board to-day, ,\ir. J. McAllister (ciiairnmn) presiding, the others present being: Messrs C- D- Sole, B. i\lcK. Morison, E. W. Hancock, K. Walter, J. O'Keill C. R. Finnerty, and F. J. ilackav. '' The chairman statcn that 'during the month the epidemic was causing anxiety when the Aboard met in November had taken a large toil of the population. He expressed appreciation of the wholehearted manner in which the pulblic had helped, and said this showed the public generally had proved there was a good ileal more of human sympathy than most people creditc-d. and a largo number had largely increased their estimation 'by their unseLfish labor?. Where the board had received sucF generous and voluntary spontaneous treatment it would be invidious to particularise, but it was only right that a record of appreciation of these services should be recorded bv the Board This rie\r was shared by the other membjrs. and the motion was rie<>The c'lairman also paid a tribute to the late Mrs HoTuTy. That lady had only recently gone to Tahora, on a bush section, and when the call came she took over charge of the temporary hospital end did splendid work until overcome by thp epidemic and being removed to Stratford, where she died on Sundav. He moved a vote of appreciation of her services and Bympattiy with the family.— Curried. In that case, seeing that the husband bad provided the house, bedding, utensils, etc., it could hardly lie expected that this family should be cliarged the board rate of £* 2s per week.—Eventually it was resolved that the chairman and Messrs Sole, Monson, and Fmnertv should go through tils account*- and the board hold another meeting within a fortnight. The chairman stated that from November 9 to December 7, OS patients had bren received at the main and temporary hospitals, 34 had ibcen discharged, whilst deaths totalled 25. The trouble, however, he was pleased to say, was now well under way, and he hoped that within » fortnight they would have one. if not both, temporary hospitals closed, but unt ; l then it was impossible to get an idea of their liability.
GENiSAL. Armistice celebrations, and then the epidemic, have knocked everything else on the head. JTow things are beginning to right; public functions and meetings are getting hack to the old routine. Tomorrow evening the executive of the recent Copper Trail town and country competition on behalf of the Red Cro3S fund meet, when it is expected all those interested will make a point of attendi ' n SCable information has been received that Privata A D. Corkill, son of Mr. W. Corkill, Stratford,, has been admitted to hospital in France, suffering from disordered action of the heart and bronchitis The soldiei has not had the besi of hick, as previously he was wounded. All hope that he will make a good re cpvery. It was intended to have had a day out for the children and adults at Ngaere Gardens on Thursday. The management have postponed tTio date till the following Thursday, 19th inst., when an invitation ia given to one and all to visit the gardens and forget the influenza and dull cp.re. Messrs Lester Bros., the new proprietors, intend making every effort to popularise these gardens, and those living in the district will find these ideal grounds for picnics, etc. Commencing on Thursday, 12tli inst., C. E. James will open his Christmas sale. What with peace celebrations, epidemics, etc., one finds it hard to believe that the festive season is so near.. We need to brighten up, and this desirable quality will be available to the public by inspecting the closely-packed shelves of toys for the babies, trinkets for the schoolgirl, jewellery, handbags, etc., for the ladies. For the boys Mr. James has all descriptions of games, inodors and outdoors, and for father all the best brands of tobacco and cigars, cigarettes and pipes. All welcome to inspect the premises.—Advt.
