DISTRICT A NEWS.

MIDHIRST. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A painful accident happened here on Wednesday Afternoon to Mr E. Spray, of the factory stall', ,rlio war, assisting to load produco on to 11 truck when a case slipped and badly crushed his hand. Ko time was lost in conveying the sufferer 10 the Stratford hospital, where ho received medical attention. Owing to the manager (Mr Bowman) an 3 other members of the factory staff (being down with influenza, Mr Spray has had very heavy work during the last few weeks, and will 'be much missed during liia enforced absence. After ~'orking strenuously since the outbreak of the epidemic as medical assistant, jur schoolmaster (Mr 0, Mail) is down with the influenza, tat I tm pleased to report is progressing 1 favorably. General admiration is freely expressed by residents here of

tho way in which he carried out his duties, and it is no exaggeration to say that for a period, whilst the epidemic was at its worst, Mr Mail and his acting chauffeur (Mr, H. Coleman), were working night and day, and by their untiring efforts were doubtless

the means of saving many live*. Mrs J. Shotter, who suffered a relapse has been seriously ill, but latest reports state that her condition is improving, as is that also of Mrs P. Harkness and Mrs G. Keiley. The epidemic seems to have been particularly severe on the York, Rutland, and Croydon roads.

Amongst the many ready helpers wlio have aided those who have been down, none have worked harder for the affected than Mr K. Adlam, of the Croydon Road, and I hear he has been especially conspicuous in the front line at the returned soldiers' settlement, where the "flue" strafe has been very heavy.
