POSITION' IX SOUTHLAND. 231 DEATHS TO DATE. Invcreargill, Last Night. Uio epidemic is still abating fast all over Southland, The position in the country districts has improved greatly during the past few days. The Vigilance Committee completed its ivork and has disbanded. The Hospital and Charitable Aid BoaTd is now able to do all that is necessary. The tramway and public services report they are in a touch better position altogether. The former is not yet normal.
One outbreak of spinal meningitis is reported, another suspected amongsi children Isolated in the auxiliary hospital has been notified.
Deaths to date in the Southland heatlh area total 231.
SICKNESS AT THE CAMP. PROTECTING GILBERT ISLANDS. Wellington, Last Night. The number of cages of sickness in tlie camps now is 113, 13 toeing serious. There was one death at Peatlierston. In view of the importance of preventing the epidemic from spreading to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, a proclamation has been issued closing Funafuti as a port of entry until further notice.

Improved prospects as to tho influenza were reported yesterday to continue throughout the district. There were only two fresh eases to-day, neither being serious, and no deaths. With two or three exceptions, all the convalescents are making good progress, and it is expected that the temporary hospitals at Temuka, Pleasant Point, and Fairlie will close to-morrow. Tho New Zealand Presbyterian Bible Classes' Conference has been cancelled. It will be held at Timaru next year.
