WESTERN FRONT.

ENTRY INTO GERMANY,

NO ILLUSIONS AS TO BRITAIN'S POWER. Received Dec. 5, 7.40 p.m. London, Dee. 4. A war correspondent, describing the entry into Germany, says it is a curious feeling going through the villages, where supposedly every person hates and curses you. The houses are closed and silent, from behind drawn curtains white faces stare, and the desolation and silence are in marked contrast to the triumphant procession over beflagged and decorated streets of eastern France. Hearing Malmedy we saw the first German groups of men, who saluted silently, taking off their hats as the unceasing stream of cavalry, transport, and artillery bowed by, leaving the Germans under no illusions iegarding the fitness and power of the British army. No German troops were visible. Older was kept by new town guards, consisting of revolutionary soldiers who left their regiments, giving up their arms and wearing civilian clothes and White armlets. In the streets there Were placarded notices, signed by the burgomaster, urging the population to keep order and bear themselves with dignity and worthiness.—Aua. A .2. Cable Assoc. and Renter,

A general order issued to the British army of occupation 9ays: "Intercourse with the inhabitants of Germany must be confined to what is essential, and be marked by courtesy and restraint. Separation and compensation from the German people are matters for the appointed authorities to take care of."—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. X ARMY OF OCCUPATION. ASTONISHMENT AT GERMAN FOOD SUPPLIES. PRISONERS ONLY PEOPLE STARVING. New York, Dee. 4. Mr. Edwin James, correspondent with the American Army in Treves, says:— In view of Germany asking the United States to feed her, Americans are astonished at the plentifulness of food in Treves. The inhabitants do not show traces of ill nourishment. Though food prices are high, they are lower than Paris prices— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. The only people showing hardships and starvation are the Allied war prisoners. They are gaunt pictures of misery, and eiad in rags. General orderliness is well-preserved. The condition of the city is a contrast to tlife wide devastation in France and Belgian centres, FOCH PRAISES BRITISH. DECISIVE FACTOR IN VICTORY. London, Nov. 16.
