BILLIARDS.
The average business man lights a pipe or cigarette immediately after breakfast, and walks a few yards to the train or tramear. He smokes on the way to the city, works in an ill-ventilated office until lunch-time, and then eats more than he ought, and smokes again. In the afternoon there is more smoking, and tea. He smokes as he returns home, and later eats a hearty dinner. Such a life must inevitably result in indigestion, an enlarged waist measurement, flabby muscles, and a general lessening of vitality, if it does not lead to more serious ills. Tlie remedy is: Play billiards after dinner. First, there is the walking exercise which the game affords; the player will probably walk three miles an hour round the table. Not less beneficial are the bending, stretching, and using of the arms, which aid digestion, check corpulence and stimulate the circulation. Last, but not least, of the beenfits derived is the relieving of the mind from business careß. Everything is forgotten but the game, just as with golf. The mind is refreshed by a new train of thought, and its tone is improved. For the middleaged man especially no better indoor recreation could be devised. He will find that an hour or two of billiards in the evening will work wonders in his condition. But one important point must not be forgotten. The room must be well ventilated, and the air kept fresh and pure, as is the case with The Criterion Billiard Parlors (next door to Avery's, Devon Street), which have been thoroughly renovated and are up tp date in every respect, visitors being entertained o afternoon tea—a feature of the eutftbishment.—Advt.
