DISTRICT NEWS.
TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Deep regret was expressed iiore when it became known that Mrs. Penwarden, wife of the manager of the Rugby Road factory, had died in the New Plymouth ■hospital. Her husband has also been down with the epidemic, but made a fine recovery. Although deceased lias not been long in this district, she made herself decidedly popular, and many will share the sorrow of the bereaved husband and child in their loss. Another death I have to record is that of Miss Goodwin, a young woman, whose parents recently purchased the farm of Mr. N. Stephenson. Deceased was treated for the influenza at her home. Unsatisfactory symptoms deieloped, and Or. Steven, of Stratford, was summoned. Her position was then almost hopeless, and would not permit of removal to the hospital. As far ::s I can gather, Tariki has lost 10 residents. The community is a small -jne, numbering about 400, taking the district from Rugby Road north to Croydon Road south. The Tariki F&tridtic Society Junto again taken up ilie position of the Hamblyn family. When the sixth boy went, and after four had been killed, ■the committor desired that the sixth should not go to the trencehs, but be kept at the base oflioe. Lately the epidemic lift* carried off t'ie father and another son. The Tariki Society lias ■now forwarded a lettc to the authori--tie-i desiring that l'livale L. F. Hamblyn should he relieved from military duties as early i's possible, in order that 'ie may return and assist in the farm duties here, Mrs. Hamblyn, I am pleased to 'Say, is bearing well under her heavy load of sor>w.
