A London cable states that Prince Antoine of Orleans died as a result of a flying on Tuesday whilst Mr. John Robertson, ex-M.P. for OtaJvi, who is now a flaxmiJl worker, is mentioned as a candidate for the Otaki seat at next general election.
At the New Plymouth Hospital on Saturday the death occurred of Mrs. Winifred Sisley, a well-known and highly-respected local nurse. Captain W- H. Ha.wkins, late of Okato, and ex-M.P. for Pahiatua, has announfced his candidature for Wellington South, rendered Vacant by the death of Mr. Hindmarph. Miss Hazel Woolfe, who came from Awakino to assist as a V.A.D.. and was Btricken with the disease, is making good progress at the New Plymouth hospital. At Patea the death occurred recently of Mr. Copestake, senr., who had readied the ripe age of 84 years. He had contracted. the prevailing malady, and burst ■ a blood vessel in a fit of coughing, and expired almost immediately. Mr. F. Matthews, of Waverley, has received advice that his son, Rifleman £. P. Matthews, who was previously reported as misßing, is now reported to have been killed in action.
Mr. Oscar Symjes, formerly master of the Wanganul-Waverley Hunt Club and well known on -tfliis coast, h&ci a severe shaking at Auckland on Wednesday through being knocked down by a motor cycle. Mr. W. J. Laurent,' of Normanby, has received advice that'll his son, Private W. J. Laurent, was wounded in has right buttock on November 11, and was sent to hospital. On November 13 he was removed to a convalescent depot in France. Word has been received in Eltham of the death at Te Kuiti of Mr. H. D. Cook, who was for many years a resident of Eltiiiam. Deceased, who died on the 23rd inst., was for a long time in charge of the drapery department of Mr. C. A. Wilkinson's business.—Argus. In a recent list of war honors appear the names of the following Taranalti men who have been awarded the Military Medal:—Corporal E.J.Linn (R. W. Linn, Normanby, father); Private C. C.' Lord (0! P. Lord, Hiiwera, father); Lance-Corpora 1 . C. J. Ball (Mrs. C- J. Ball, Eltliaih, wife); Lance-Corporal John R. Gould (E. P. Gould, Eltham, brother).
An old colonist, Mr. Robert Rain, of Clevedon, died at Auckland on Tuesday, at the age of 80. He was a native of Glasgow, and arrived in Auckland in 1853. From that date he was employed on the staff of the newspaper Southern Cross till ISGS, when he forsook the city to engage in farming at Clevedon, where he resided till his death. Deceased's only surviving relative is Mrs. R. Whjte, of Eltham.
General regret will be felt at the death of Mr. W. Dockrill, the well-known boot retailer, which occurred yesterday, at the early age ol 35 years. Deceased was the son of Mr. E. Dockrill (who for many years was Mayor of New Plymonth)', and, though lie took little interest in public matters, be did much in a quiet way to further' the town's Interests- He contracted the prevailing malady only a few days ago. The death is announced of one of the oldest New Zealand-born residents, Mrs. John McElwain, daughter of the late Rev. J. Whiteley, a Wesleyan missionary, who arrived in New Zealand in lsiiO, and was afterwards killed by the Maoris in the White Cliffs massacre at Taranaki on February 13, 1969. Mts. McElwain was born in the Hokianga district in 1535. She was married to the late 'Mr- John McElwain, who for many years was a well-known resident of Auckland. Deceased is survived by three sons, two daughters, and three grandchildren. Another grandson lost his life at Mons.
