PURCHASE OF BUTTER.

The completion of the arrangement for the sale of New Zealand's exportable surplus of butter to the Imperial Government apparently means that the disposal of butter and cheese is arranged for this season and next seasonThe prices to be paid are those originally offered by the Imperial authorities, viz., 10Jd per lb. of cheese and 181s per cwt. for butter, equivalent to Is 7%d per lb. The prices are f.o.b. in both cases It is understood that the Imperial Government will pay storage after two months.

La*t year the Imperial Government paid lOd per lb. for cheese and 151s per cwt. for butter, with half of the profits made on distribution in the United Kingdom. This year they offered the producers IOiM for cheese and 181s per cwt. for butter. The cheese producers had demanded this price on the ground that it w,as already being paid to the Canadian producers, and when their representatives met the Prime Minister some weeks ago the offer was acceptedbut the butter producers asked for ISOs per cwt., on the ground that this priee was the equivalent of 10% d per lb. for cheese on a butter fat basis. The Prime Minister had somo communication with the Imperial authorities on the subject, hut the •food Controller would not/advance the price, and the representatives of the producers decided recently to ac-cept-it. The Dprmrtmont of Trhporlal Pupilios will be.able now to ■finance the■ p'fireliase of dairy produce on the old conditions, and 'there will he no further difficulty rojrarding the payment of advances on butter and cifceese in the stores.'
