TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING., The mpnlhly meeting of the Tara'Jialri Education Board was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs it. Masters (chairman), 11. Trimble, and P. J. White. Leave of absence, was granted to Messrs C. A. Wilkinson, M.P.. S. U. Smith, M.P., 11. 11. Grayling and H. J. Laves and T. Buchanan.
TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS.
The chairman reported that during the interim ho hud made the folohving temporary appointments:—Eitzroy, Mrs Geddes, assistant; Pungarehu, Mrs Bosher, assistant; West End, Mrs Howartb, assistant; York, Mias E. Erost, assistant; Einnerty, Miss D. Brown, assistant; Matau, Mrs E. Moss, sole teacher; Vogeltown, Miss 11. UoroBrowne, assistant; Haw era, Mrs M. Jones, assistant; Kaponga, Mrs Bosher, assistant, and Miss Leo, first assistant; Central, Miss Merron, assistant; Normanby, Miss Trewin, assistant; Tataraimaka, Miss Longley, assistant; AckJand, Mrs C. J. Linn, sole teacher. The report was adopted.
OVERSEER'S REPORT.
The overseer (Mr C. H. Moon) reported as follows: New Work—Auroa: With the exception of painting t'lie roof the class room is completed and classes are now carried on in the new building; the roof- will be I painted later on in the summer. We have also erected a concrete tank to hold about 90 gallons, Technical College: The additions to the Technical College are just about completed and the two class rooms will be ready for occupation within a week. I would respectfully ask t'iie Board to consider thf* matter of removal of the plumbing room and old engineering building. 1 would also suggest the office and Technical boundary bo extended up to the recently ploughed and graded part of tho Central ground and a tennis court for the Technical girls be formed immediately opposite the Education office. Normanby School: We have made a start with the above new school. Maintenance Work.—Makaka: Painting repairs 'have been carried oat and general repairs attended to. The' Committee propose to put a concrete floor in the shelter shed later on and I wouk' recommend that the Board pay .for material. Manaia: The new girls' outoffices were completed and several repairs attended to. Kapuni: Repairs to tihe wash-house floor and painting repairs to the inside of the kitchen and bath-room were attended to, parts of the range were also renewed. In regard to the request for a copper frame; this will be held over pending a reply from the Department in the matter of providing wash-tubs and coppers generally Mangatoki: Several sundry repairs were attended to at the school and residence. Eltharn: Owing to the continual breakage of windows on the north side of the school we have protected them with netting. Cardiff: As instructed I went into the matter of repairs, etc., at this school and would re : comipend that the echopl receive general painting repairs inside and out as soon as labor is available. Mahoe: As instructed I went into the matter of a partition in the class room. There are two teachers knd 5t would be a great convenience to have a partition; the room is long and would itself to being divided. I would recommend Uhat a partition be erected and a heater be put in with the understanding that the work may have to stand over for some time. Rowan: As instructed I went into the matter of the Committee's request to pay tor fencing erected to divide off the play-ground. The chairman of Committee has promised to look into this matte* and send along further particulars. Pending this reply I have no recommendation to make. Riverlea: As instructed I went into the matter of draining the horse paddock and teacher's paddock. The teacher offered to drain his part if ttoe Board or Committee will do the boys' horse paddock. It is certainly a necessary work as the children get wet Seet catching their horses. I understood the Committee would send in an estimate of the cost of the work. Awatuna: At tfte request of the Committee I visited this school and went into various matters; the principle being the state of the fencing round the 6chool. ground and the division fence between the tcadlier's resident and the school and tho shelter shed floors. I would recommend that the Board find the material for the fencing, about 30 to 40 posts and one cwt. of wire and the material for t'iie concrets floors in the shelter shed the Committe to find the labor.
General—At the request of the Eltham Committee I met the chairman and Head teadher and went into the .matter Of cm open air class room; and as suggested to keep within the probable amount available, prepared and sent along a plan for an open air shelter for. the infant department to be erected on the south boundary , The matter of tflie suggestion- of- altering the boundary of the Board's office property and the Central School grounds was referred to a sub-commit-tee to report upon.
iRUANT OFFICER'S REPORT.
The-truant-officer (Mr G. Pascoe) reported as follows: —I have sent .out S8 i>otices to parents of children attending primary schools for irregular Attendance. Apart from these two causes file attendance is very good. Two parents were flu 3d for their children's irregular attendance. Technical.—l 'have sent out 22 final notices in New Plymouth aid Hawera to parents of bovs for irregular attendant at night classes. The attendance at ihese classes is not as good as deIne report was adopted.
j GENERAL. !n response to a request from the Cpnmittce of the Hftwera District High S/liool, it was decided to ask the Dejft ;-iineiit to establish a side school at Jvh&reroa, up to Mid including Stan-M-u-
The following appointments to school committees were approved: Ratapiko, Messrs H. Symons and P. Biesick; Ka. .ponga, Mr F. B. Wililama; Kaimiro, Mr G. Gilbert"; liiore, Mr A. G. Stewart; Pungarehu, Mr G. Hughson. Sixteen teachers were granted leave of absence for varying periods, and five members of tho Board's office staff were granted leave of absence on account of illness. The chairman's action in apopinting Miss D. Peach as temporary assistant was confirmed Mr Taylor (Whangamomona) and Mr Henderson (Hawera) were granted leave of absence to sit for examinations.
Miss Edwards applied for special leave in order to visit Australia, and it was decided to reply that as the scfiools had closed earlier t'lian usual there was no necessity to grant the special leave.
Jt was decided to inform the Moatoa settlers that provided they have a suitable room in which to hold school, and tiliat they can find a qualified person to undertake the instruction, the Board would grant £8 per head per annum on the average atendanee.
Mrs White, of Te Moata, wrote applying for remuneration for t'lie teaching of her child, and the Board decided that, it was not called upon to pay a parent salary for the instruction of a child.
It was decided to inform the Tnliora Committee that the Board 'had no objection to the Decalogue being'displayed on the school walls.
Tho application of the Finnerty Committee for the enlargement of their school building was referred to the senior inspector for a report. It. was decided that, as the Board cannot control the portion of land at present leased to Mr D. Gardner before the end of April, 1920, the application of the Riverlea Committee be held over until just prior to that dated, but that in t'lie event of Mr Gardner being willing to surrender the lease, the Board would be prepared to review the position upon receipt of the surrender.
The overseer's recommendation to supply fencing material and one cwt. of wire to the Awatuna Committee and material for the concrete. floor of . the shelter shed were agreed to. .»q , The overseer was directed to s}vpply a curtain and fixings for' the Huiakama School, and it was decided iL to pay thp. Board's subsidy towards the cost of concrete work. The Board decided to record its vote in favor of Mr P. J H. White as a member of the Committee of Advice of the Wellington Training College. A number of matters relating to repairs to various school buildings, etc., were referred to the overseer for reports. The action of the chairman in allowing the Manaia and Stratford Technisal, and the Piko primary, school buildings to be used for hospital purposes in connection with the influenza epidemic was approved. Accounts amounting to £3QG 3s 5d were passed for payment.
