Mr C. N. Scurr, Mayor of St. Kllda, Dunedin, has succumbed to influenza. Mra fEmmsline Smith, wife of Mr G. Harold. Smith M.P., of Pahiatua, died at Wellington on Saturday Mr. M. Paltridge, of the W&iiua district, died yesterday from the prevailing epidemic. Mr. and Mrs. Fctmell received wond
that their son, Private J Fennel], has died of wounds. Private Fennell was about 33 years of age, and left with
the 33rd 'Reinforcements.
Mr. R. W. McVilly, of the Railway Dw partment, who is reported to be suffer* ing from influenza, was one of the only two railway officers in Dunedin who weathered the epidemic of IS9O, and remained on duty right through the periodThe Taranaki Education Board yesterday passed resolutions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Misi Paice (a member of the Technical College staff), and with Mr J. H. Quilliam (the Board's solicitor) on the death of his son, Lieut. C. Quilliam. The resignation of Miss Eisc, art instructress at the New Plymouth Technical College, was accepted by the Board of Education at its meeting yesterday. Miss Eiso has accepted an appointment at the Auckland School of Art, and takes up her new position on March Ist of next year.

Three orphan children 01 tender years have been left to mourn the death of their parents. The death is announced of Signaller L, G. Gibson, second son of Mr. J. Gibson, of Pahiatua, and previously foreman of the Taranaki Daily News. He was born in Feildlns; end was educated at Dannevirke and New Plymouth. He enter«(i-the drapery trade in. New.Plymouth and afterwards went to' Inglewood, He enlisted with the 22nd Reinforcements, and was attached to a signalling section in England, and,saw considerable service,, in the firing line until his death, wMcii took place on November 4. Mrs. Widdowson, wife of Captain H, h. Widdowson, of the Medical Corps, died) in the Auckland Hospital on Sunday as the result of pneumonia, following influenza. Captain Widdowson. who was a meit'.ber of one of the Wellington military medical hoards, was sent to Ancle, land to aseiat In coping with the epi-. deroie, Mrs. Widdowson, who, pmr to, her marriage ft 1m yeaTs ago, wis 4 nursi! at the Christehuroh Hospital, a> companied him in order to assist as a volunteer worker, and before contracting* the complaint was attending patients in tne Ponsonby district Captam Widdowson is at present in the Technical School temporary hospital, having contracted pneumonia.
