LICENSING BILL.

Wellington, Last Night.

The Licensing Bill was before Cabinet again to-day and underwent considerable .evision. It cannot reach the House now ioi several days.

PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE.

Mr- I'raser states that the .Public Works estimates will be ready for presentation at the end of this week or the beginning of next week. He considers the estimates will make ample provision for the necessities that may arise before next session.

HYDRO-ELECTPvTO PROPOSALS

A report outlining the Government's proposals for the development of hydroelectric power will be presented to the TTouao on Wednesday. Mr. Fraser stated that provision will be made on the estimates for the preliminary work, and that it will not be necessary to ask for a special appropriation until next year.

THE BUTTER PURCHASE,

The butter purchase is practically concluded, but some points regarding finance and storage have still to be adjusted.

Miss A. Gray, who lias held the ladies' tennis championship of the Dominion for the New Zealand Singles since 1912, and, with Mrs Travers, and later Miss Baird, the doubles championship for ten years, died on Saturday, says a Press- Association message from Auskland. Christchurch reports that Major W. C. Morrison, second in command of the Canterbury Military District, died rather suddenly to-night of heart failure, following a severe attack of influenza. Mr. S. Hill, Permit Officer at Auckland, and recently of New Plymouth, hw received the following telegram froia the Minister for Defence, Wellingtons—"l have much pleasure in informing you that Second-I»M>atenant W. J. B. Hill bat, been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry on the field of action. I sincerely regrei he has not survived to receive personally such a coveted decoration" .

The many friends of Mr. J. Darney will he sorry to hear of his deatli, which occurred at the New Plymouth Hospital. Mr. Darney, who was an engrae-driyrr for many years, was very popular with his fellow-workers, and leaves fc wife and one son, for whom much sympathy will be felt.

Hoskin. For ten year 9 years he farmed on the Kent •Road, and' then took up land on the Croydon Road, where he was for twenty years. He leaves a widow, four sons and 'four daughters It will be remembered that he sent six sons to the front, four making the supreme sacrifice. They j were William, James, Henry and Thomas. Bfnest, returned wounded, and Frederick is still in Prance. One sons was taken to the Stratford hospital last week.

The death took place at the New Plymouth Hospital of another member of the nursing stiff in the person of Nurse Austin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James .Austin, who contracted the prevailing disease in the course of her duties. For some days it was known tjjat iier condition was critical, and at one time it was thought that ale might recover, but she took a turn for the worse on Sunday night, and expired yesterday morning. She was a fine type of young lady, and an exceedingly popular member of the staff, which was much affected by the falling of this second blow. The sympathy of the whole town will be extended to the parents and family in the loss of an only daughter and sister of great promise and nobility of character.
