STILL FIGHTING HARD.
NO DIMINUTION YET. fciittKJUS.OASES FSOM THE oousmt Yesterday, was a very busy day at the Citizens' Health Committee'* depot- To give an idea, of the work, a few facta may be mentioned. The motor-cars raade over 100 special trips from Bahotu to Urenw, as far down to Tariki—covering practkails the whole of North Taranaki. They carried temperature readsis, lady helpers and nurses, supplies of mertlrmes, etc. The block captains visited every noose that did not have the "All Well* card up and in many eases* those that had the cards ■p. Boor hundred and eighty-five new •was giving particulars of houses infected were pot up. Five hundred and fifty-seven bottles of medicine were delivered.
Yesterday inspection showed there to be 200 new eases. Fifty-eight houses were infected, as against SS the day before. Of, the 200 new eases, 10 were marked at tetioas- Good reports of those under treatment were received This is a satisfactory feature of the position in town. By the system of regular inspection—and prompt attention —the proportion of serious eases is being kept down to a minimum. A good number who were down at the end of last week are now practically recovered, but they are being enjoined to remain hone until all danger of infection has gone.
To-day a close inspection of Carrington Road is to he made. Practically every other road has been visited and the cases an reported upon and dealt with.
The organisation had a heavy day yesterday, for it had to deal with so many outside cases and help the smaller centre* by advice, prescriptions, etc- But the whole machine is working splendidly. A great many heads of businesses bare thrown themselves heartily into the work,.as well as other zealous and capable workers, and it is not snrprista* tfcat *wa gftod result* are being obtained. There is, however, much work Wore the committee this week, esneeially in the country, where the conditions are erowinely serious.
The Mayor, after consultation with tie *Medical Superintendent, decided yesterday morning to ask the townspeople to remain closed to business tin Monday morning. Thia d'jcision met with the unanimous approval of afl concerned in the work of relief. To open up the town at this juncture, when there ia such a great necessity for continuing the good work tka organisation is doing, would be a great mistake; indeed, it would be inviting disaster. We are by bo means out of the wood yet, and it will take all the efforts the organisation is capable of to check the disease and k**p down the mortality. The country, too. has to be considered. Help must be extended to the settlers, who are in most cases m a worse plight than town sufferers, as. necaHarrr enough, the disease seems to fasten itself on every member of a fanner's house, where in town quite a nronnrtton of inmates of a house escape Then farmer* have their cows to milk and stock to feed. The town committee are giving all the help they can, and will continue to do so. This is possible whilst the town is shnt down; it would be impossible if businesses were onea, Bnt'tH great thins is that we hsv» rot. to check the disease both in town nrtd comitrv and can onlv do so by maratainine the flirhtine force", and eontinnhur the inspecting and other work.
It it hoped to-day to institute a system whereby the cause of infection of new homes will be diagnosed and recorded.
There was a good response yesterday to the appeal for medicine bottles. The boys are still working, but some of them have lost their dash. More boy helpers are required so as to spell the toad boys
IflE WOMEVS WORK. The Women's Committee have had a very busy tana in preparing foodstuffs, taking temperatures, providing noises mad domestic help. Tuey are working rrom early mom till late at night. Yesterday morning at IJO they were still hard at work, getting things ready for the following day- The same was the ease last nigut Besides the cooking and preparing at the rooms, many ladies of the town are making op foodstuffs and sending them to the rooms. Use for an the supplies can be found. One lady is with a difficult case and has had no sleep for two nights. Another is sitting up and caring for a family that were in a serious condition. By dint of her unremitting attention they will all be polled round. She is spelled occasionally by other devoted workers. At one boarding-house, where there are eight «eriously ill, Mrs. Burgess keeps two workers constantly going day and night. Too much praise eannai be accorded these unselfish and devoted women for the nobis work thev_are rendering. On Tuesday the Mayoress lost seven of her helpers, all going down witk the influenza, whilst she lost some more yesterday. Further help is required; also supplies "f lemons.
"TrHevrood asked for lemons to-day," said Mr*. Burgess to a News repre*entam V i> "pnd it was hard—oh. so hard—to refuse them. Do ask the people who ■i» kiinplien te send them in at once." Will those who can heed *he appeal? If rher can't get them in, please notify the -ommittees and they wflT send for the fnvt.
