WAITARA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Nov. 14.

The influenza epidemic is assuming serious dimensions there, there being over fifty cases in the town. Dr. Campbell is having a very strenuous time in trying to oope with the numerous calls on his services.

A Maori family near Huirangi are having a very hard time, two deaths having occurred already, and another one of the family is expected to succumb at any moment.

If this scourge gets a firm hold among fehs Native population it will take a terrible toll. So far no deaths have occurred at Waitara, and it is to be hoped it will continue to take the milder form.

One of the barges which went ashore in the gale was floated off on the 13th and towed to the wharf by t'lie Wetere. Judging by its appearance as it went up the river it did not appear to have sustained much damage. The other barge is expected to be refloated by the end of the week.

The Borough Council (held its monthly meeting last night,, and decided to close the library forja fortnight or longer at the Mayor's discretion, and to thoroughly disinfect the room and books before it is reopened. The overseer was instructed to inspect all baik-yards, to see that the by-laws were being complied with in respect to rubbislt.

It was decided that in future all applications for water supply and any other work should be made to the acting town clerk, and that no stores or material of any kind should be procured without an order from him, The resignations of Crs. Hallam and Allen were received by the council and accepted with regret. It was decided to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancies, and also to take a poll on tttie proposal to form a fire board. Mr. A. J. Arms, acting town clerk, v» - as appointed returning officer. The resignation of Mr. J. Jamieson. borough overseer, was received and accepted with deep regret, as he has proved a very competent overseer. He is taking up a more remunerative position at Taihape. Wo wish him every success. Word has been received that Mr. G. Fear will be taking up his duties again the end of the montiit.
