Stratford, Nov. i«. i.'a usual monthly uiveliug was held this morning. Present: Messrs J. MeAilister (chairman), (J. D. Sole, K. McK. Morison, E. \V. liancoek, F. J. Mackay, Mia C. Ii- Finuertw
The chairman stated that they were in a very serious position regarding the influenza epidemic, it was unfortunate that Dr. Paget had left for Wellington yesterday morning'. The board had forwarded a letter to the military authorities requesting the release of Dr. Paget. The superintendent (Dr. Steven) had been in a bad way, but was now making good progress. Dr. Gordon was in for strenuous work, and was doing her best, receiving the assistance of the Plunket N'urse and one or two others. The hospital staff was also depleted through (he ravages of the complaint. The start and officials had done their best, and he [the chairman) had also endeavored to obtain the services of others. Mr. Sole spoke in appreciative terms of the chairaction in regard to the outbreak, ana Son his motion, seconded by Mr. Hancock, a vote of appreciation was passed to the chairman for the work lie had done.
Regarding the vacancy caused by the resignation of Nurse Old to the Whanganiomona Association it was pointed out that it was a difficult matter to get a certificated nurse to go out there. Mr. Finnerty stated that he believed the Taumarumii Hospital Hoard subsidised the Oliura district. Mr F. J. Mackay stated that, the Wliangamomor.a County evidently struck too low. and the remedy was to increase these and thus improve the hospital subsidy. Eventually the matter was left to the chairman. The Health Dopartment,Wellington : forwarded a letter advising certain precautions regarding the influenza epidemic, the closing for one -week of picture and other shows, and to appeal to the Red Cross (Society.—Received. ITEMS. Inquiries made show that Dr. Steven is making very good progress at his residence from the influenza bout- Corporal Barker, D.C.M., is reported to be in a verv serious condition at Toko.
Stratford Hospital; is crowded to the doors with influenza patients, and the hoard members have been kept extremely busy in trying to meet the demands made upon the institution. In this connection a letter was read from Dr. Steven statintr ammoniated quinine had been forwarded to AVhangamomona for influenza patients, and that all sufferers 'diould go to bed immediately the symptoms of the epidemic are detected. At the Hospital Board meeting this morning. Mr. Sole said it was a scandalous thing that, whereas business place? were being closed, the hotels were being left open. It might look a small thine to "itno people, but it was a shocking thine; the state of affairs in Stratford. Mr MaekaT thought that if it was necessary to close hoteh it was also desirable to have railways stepped and auction rooms closed.
