A NEW ZEALAND HERO.
VXI MAN KILLED EI ACTION.
(Spewf.l Dispatch from the New Zealand kad. Ofikiiil War Com»poi)dent, Captain Malcolm Ross.)
I October 25. Yesterday I mentioned that one of our bravest soldiers was killed in the fighting that gained us tfie Escaillon bridgeheads. The reference was to Sergeant Henry James Nicholas, V.C., of the First Canterbury Regiment. Ho was shot through the lead while demanding the surrender of some enemy soldiers whom i.fae saw vaguely in the darkness. The incident that gained him hia Viotoria Orbs occurred last yea? in very difficult fighting at Polderhoeg Chateau. He was then a private with a Lewis gun section. Our men met with very severe ■machine-gun fire, and Nicholas, rushing forward, sliot the officer who was in command of a strong point, and overcame the remainder of the garrison by means of bombs and the bayonet. Four prisoners and the machine-gun were captured. Subsequently, when the advance had reached its limit and our men were still hard pressed, he collected anrminfition under heavy rifle and mach-ine-gun fire.
