In the absence of the Chairman of the Soldiers' Farewell and Yve'come dome Committee, Mr F Harknesa (wiho was dov/6 with Lifluenza), iir ilail presided In the returned soldiers with illuminated addresses, Mr Mail remark, ed that both were locally bred txfys, they tad done their duty nobly at the war, and Midhivsi *ras proud of them and very glad to see them back. (Ap ploußC.) Ho congratulated Private Jones on having brought back a bride with him. (Cheers and iausical honors.) Private P. Jones, on belialf of his comrade and himself, briefly tihanked the Midhirst people for their presentations and welcome home. The following contributed items:—Mis. Hueker. Misses Huse, Martin, and Fever, Messrs Lumen, T. Wilson. Hamilton, and Stephenson.
The members of the Ladies' Committee, as usual, "carried on" at supper time in a manner which was above criticism, and dancing, which followed under the able management of Mr. J. Shotter. M.C.. terminated a very enjoyable evening. Miss Huse presided at the piano, ami extras were contributed by Miss Martin.
On the receipt of the news on the morningVf the Bth inst. that Germany] had signed an armistice there was general rejoicing. The Church bells were vigorously rung and the factory thistle well Jlown. The station authorities. enl ; . ting the services of a returned soldter (Mr McDonald) to climb up a telegraph post, lost no time in hoisting the Xew Zealand flag. It was intended, and posters were got out, to have held a celebration in the Hall in the evening, but the subsequent news tihat the armistice had not been signed arming there was "nothing doing." Though the bathing season has viot yet properly commenced the sigbt of local residents indulging in shower baths has been quite a common ons here lyI regret to Teport that Influenza, which "appears to have started in the Stratford suburb, has uow Invaded Midhirst itself. Many of our leading citizens are laid up. and the doctors and chemists are having a very busy time.
