At his own request he was transferred to I France, and has since taken part in [several severe engagements. TUie Hon. W. C. P. Carncross. who ! was elected Speaker of the I Council, was horn in Bendigo, Victoria, \ in 1555. He came to New Zealand at an ,"h early age and settled in Dunedin. Later I he became proprietor of the Taieri Advocate. After considerable association with local bodies he fought his first election in 1884 and was defeated by 76 votes by ihc. Hon, James Fulton, who was a strong candidate. In 1887 he contested the Taieri seat again and was defeated by only seven votes, but the following election he was returned to tlhe House of Representatives with a good majority. He was returned again at four successive elections, and after serving twelve years in the House of Representatives he retired, and was called to the Legislative Council. He has sat continuously in the Council since 1903. In 1910 he was elected Chairman of Committees, and during the last tftree sessions, following on the illness of the late Sir Oharles Johnston, has occupied the chair as Acting Speaker. •
