OPUNAKE.
TOWN BOARD. „('From Our Own Correspondent.) Opunake, Nov. 7. The ordinary monthly meeting of the board was held ou Monday evening. Present: Messrs. C. A. Trotter (chairman), J. P. Burton, S- M. Cornish, G. WRogers, E. Thorpe. Mr. N. O. Andrews, who has taken over the rights of the World's Pictures, wrote that he would only require the Town Hall on Thursday'and Saturday nights.
Owing to the poor returns from the carbide generator for lighting purposes, the clerk wrote to the Acetylene Company inquiring if it were due to faults in the generator or carbide that was the cause of the inferior returns. The company replied that complaints were made regarding two shipments of Japalese carbide.
The Health Department wrote regarding what steps the Board had taken as to dispose of nightsoil. The clerk had replied that by laws were now being compiled and that the Board Iliad interviewed a practical man regarding a system.
The chairman intimated that Mr Parkes was not disposed to pay £lO towards metalling the road he required, but considered tho amount should be levied pro rata over the residents using the road. A motion, by Mr Cormish that the road be metalled as reported on by the foreman at a cost of £4O, was defeated by the amendment (moved by Mr Burton) that one and a half chains be done.
A report of the proceedings of the hydro-electric meeting held at Stratford was read, and it was decided to support the league's action in urging the Government to puah on with ffte important scheme.
Correspondence was read between Dr Prengley, of the Health Department, and the Town Board regarding obtaining a medical man for Opunake. Dr. Barnieoat, of Xapier, liad intimated that he would take up Dr. Sharpe's practice about November S. The doctor had arranged to have Ms profession plate erected on Dr. Sharpe's late residence, over which he had obtained an option., but subsequent correspondence between llv Frengley and Dr Barnicoat regarding the position of Dr BaTron fper Mrs Barron) revealed the fact that Dr. Barninicoat notified the board that the position of affairs was unsatisfactory towards his commencing practice in 6punake.
Mr. Cornish reported that the Town Hall needed repairs, and ke .suggested that Mr. Grover do what repairs were necessary. This course was adopted. The reported (repairing guard fence on bridge on Allison street, and similar work on Dorset street. Other streets were attended to. Ho had diverted the water from Hansen's along to the recreation ground. He cleared'the tombs in military cemetery and cut gorse fence. During wet days he-made concrete pipes.
GENERAL. A' collision, without any serious result, ■happened on Te Namu bridge on Friday. Father Doolaghly's motor car collided with a dray driven by J. Halpin. The boy driver was thrown out of t'he dray to the road and received bruises. Father Doolaghty took the boy to medical assistance where his hurts were attended to.
At the meeting of the Town Board a member found out that a street in our town was named after a German —Dieffenbach is the name—and the street is a popular one for Hud's and frogs. The member is after the German's gore and is desirous to wipe the German off the face of the map of Opunuke, Mr. Stronge wrote a letter to the Town Board complaining that lie had registered to run in the town a horse that was "impounded because the badge on the ihorso was taken off by someone. If the Board does not refund him the poundage fees paid and Is Cd per hour for looking after the horse when it was impounded, ho will take legal iproceedings to recover same. The bowling club opened the seasonon Wednesday last. The large number of visitors present were welcomedby the president, Mr J. Feaver. Afternoon tea was provided by the-'-ladies.
